Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, and domestic airconditioning and refrigeration systems. You will work across a variety of sites and environments, applying your technical expertise to deliver safe, efficient, and compliant outcomes. The ideal candidate is trade-qualified, detail-oriented, and committed to high standards of workmanship and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and job requirements to plan installations, determine material needs, and establish accurate reference points prior to commencing work
- Prepare installation sites by drilling holes, fitting mounting brackets, and cutting, bending, and threading piping to suit system layouts
- Install, service, and repair system components including compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, switches, gauges, and copper lines carrying refrigerant, steam, gas, compressed air, oil, and chilled water
- Connect pipework and equipment using appropriate methods such as brazing, welding, soldering, bolting, and riveting, ensuring correct alignment and a secure, accurate fit
- Pressurise systems with test gas or fluid to identify and locate leaks, then evacuate using vacuum pumps before charging with the correct refrigerant
- Commission and test-operate refrigeration and airconditioning systems, assessing performance, checking mechanical and electrical components, and making necessary adjustments to achieve optimal operation
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on underperforming or failed systems, replacing defective components and reassembling equipment to manufacturer and compliance standards
- Conduct routine preventative maintenance and scheduled overhauls of refrigeration and airconditioning systems to extend equipment life and minimise unplanned downtime
- Adjust and calibrate system controls, thermostats, and electronic or mechanical mechanisms to meet specified performance and efficiency targets
- Maintain accurate service records, including documentation of faults identified, work performed, parts used, and follow-up actions required
- Adhere to all relevant work health and safety requirements, including safe handling of refrigerants in accordance with Australian environmental regulations
- Liaise with clients, site supervisors, and other tradespeople professionally, providing clear updates on job progress and system condition
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Certificate III in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (or equivalent recognised trade qualification)
- Current Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) issued under Australian regulations
- Proven hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial and/or industrial refrigeration and airconditioning systems
- Solid working knowledge of refrigeration cycles, electrical systems, and mechanical components
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and system schematics
- Proficiency in brazing, soldering, and pipework techniques
- Sound understanding of relevant Australian Standards and compliance requirements (including AS/NZS 1677, AS/NZS 3000)
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills with a methodical, problem-solving approach
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team across multiple sites with minimal supervision
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise workload effectively
- Valid driver's licence (C class or equivalent)
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate IV in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration or higher-level trade qualification
- Experience working with building management systems (BMS) or HVAC controls
- Familiarity with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants and natural refrigerant systems
- Working at Heights, Confined Space, or Elevated Work Platform (EWP) certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Experience across multiple sectors including retail, food processing, cold storage, or commercial construction
- Knowledge of energy efficiency principles and experience conducting system performance audits
