Primary objective
Responsible for the provision of triage, practical advice, assessment, short term management and referral for Northern Territory
mental health clients and their families in accordance with mental health legislation and Top End Mental Health Service policies
and procedures.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Experience and competence to undertake acute mental health face to face and phone triage, mental health and risk assessment
in both community and Emergency Department settings, create comprehensive care plans and deliver community based brief
intervention (up to 8 weeks) for people experiencing or recovering from acute mental illness whilst ensuring a high standard of
documentation and record keeping.
2. Collaboratively work and develop relationships with government and non-government community organisations.
3. Participate in a 24/7 roster.
4. Support the development of contemporary models of care and contribute to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and
program development activities within the team as required.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Relevant allied health qualifications (Occupational Therapy, Psychology or Social Work) that meet membership eligibility
requirements of the relevant Australian professional association, and registration for practice in Australia (AHPRA or relevant
others)
2. Has a minimum of four years’ experience in working with mental health clients with complex needs in a community setting and
evidence of ability to conduct triage, assessment and initiate care plans.
3. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with clients, carers and other professionals from diverse cultures including a
demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, family and community structures.
4. Ability to meet the requirements of and become a Designated Mental Health Practitioner.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of current issues, standards and trends in the delivery of mental health services to the target
population.
6. Sound knowledge of mental illness/disorders and contemporary approaches to mental health care.
7. Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team including skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and leadership.
8. Proficiency in and commitment to the use of electronic information systems for the maintenance of clinical and service delivery
records.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the relevant legislation guiding clinical practice for this position.
2. Hold a current Northern Territory drivers’ licence or have the ability to obtain.
