About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced HVAC Design Specialist to join our team at our Acacia Ridge branch in Brisbane, Queensland on a full-time, permanent basis.
The HVAC Design Specialist performs technical engineering functions in support of Polyaire’s domestic and light-commercial HVAC operations, with a primary focus on the design and detailed drafting of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Working within the mechanical engineering function, the role prepares detailed system designs, technical drawings, equipment schedules and supporting cost estimates to deliver efficient, code-compliant and cost-effective HVAC solutions for clients.
Key Responsibilities:
HVAC Design & Mechanical Engineering
- Develop detailed HVAC system designs for domestic and light-commercial applications, including heat load calculations, airflow and duct sizing, zoning and equipment selection.
- Apply mechanical engineering principles and relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS 1668, AS/NZS 3666) to ensure designs are technically sound, energy efficient and compliant.
- Conduct technical analysis and performance assessments of mechanical and HVAC designs to verify suitability, efficiency and conformance to specification.
- Provide technical advice on design methods, system configuration and equipment selection, and resolve engineering issues in collaboration with mechanical engineers, sales engineers and contractors.
Technical Drafting & Documentation
- Prepare detailed mechanical drawings, duct layouts, system schematics and equipment schedules using AutoCAD, Revit and other HVAC/mechanical design software.
- Produce technical documentation, design submittals and as-built drawings to support project delivery.
- Maintain drawing registers, version control and design records, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Estimating, Materials & Cost Analysis
- Prepare cost estimates, bills of materials and equipment lists to support HVAC design proposals and project quoting.
- Liaise with suppliers and vendors to obtain pricing for materials and equipment, and assess options against technical and budget requirements.
- Analyse design and cost data to optimise the balance of performance, compliance and cost-effectiveness.
Project Coordination & Technical Support
- Coordinate with sales teams, project managers and customers to ensure accurate, timely project execution.
- Support the installation, testing and commissioning of HVAC systems by providing technical drawings and design clarification.
- Record and analyse data on system performance to inform continuous improvement of designs and standard solutions.
What you will bring to the role:
- A relevant engineering qualification at AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma level (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in HVAC or mechanical design and drafting (minimum 2–3 years preferred).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and HVAC design and load-calculation software.
Working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, building codes and HVAC industry requirements.
- Strong mechanical and technical aptitude with sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail across design, drafting, documentation and estimating.
Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to collaborate across technical and commercial teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines.
Capacity to quickly learn and adapt to new software and industry tools.
