Introduction:
Description:
Based in Urana, but will work across the Federation Council area
Work full-time, 76 hours per fortnight
Opportunity to grow and develop your skills
Be part of a team contributing to your local community
Tired of the Same Old Routine?
If you are a skilled operator who thrives on variety and hates doing the exact same thing every day, we have the perfect seat for you. Federation Council is seeking a versatile Heavy Plant Operator to act as our ultimate operational "all-rounder".
Instead of being stuck in just one crew, you will step in to support and backfill across our diverse operations—including grader, construction, road patching, slashing, and signage teams. Your duties and the machinery you operate will change day-to-day to keep our region moving smoothly during periods of staff leave and absenteeism.
Your role will include:
Drive and manage a vast fleet of heavy machinery, including Jet Patchers, 12T Truck & Trailers, Low Loaders, Graders, Excavators, Rollers, and Backhoes.
Provide hands-on labour and operating skills to construct, maintain, and repair roads, bridges, drainage, footpaths, and urban streets.
Support landfilling operations, street sweeping, and emptying street bins to keep our public spaces pristine.
Complete daily pre-start checks, maintain operator logbooks, perform basic servicing, and ensure your cabins stay clean and safe.
Set up site safety signs, locate utility services (electricity, water, Telstra) before digging, and execute Traffic Control Management duties.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions alongside a highly positive, collaborative, and professional team
What You Bring to the Crew (Criteria to be addressed as part of your application):
To hit the ground running, you’ll need:
A current and valid Heavy Combination (HC) driver’s licence.
General Construction Induction Certificate (White Card) and competency certificates for major plant items.
An accredited Traffic Controller Certificate (though we will happily provide training if you need a refresh).
Proven experience in road maintenance and construction activities for both sealed and unsealed roads.
Thorough knowledge of machinery servicing, minor maintenance, and reporting repair needs early.
Excellent knowledge of WHS practices, a "safety-first" mindset, and good oral and written communication skills.
The ability to work occasional overtime and maintain the physical fitness needed for heavy lifting, shovelling, and climbing.
What’s In It for You?
We value our people and offer a workplace that supports your life both on and off the clock.
Work-Life Balance: Work a full-time, 76-hour fortnight with fortnightly rostered days off (RDOs).
Career Growth: Real opportunities to develop your skills and explore diverse career paths.
Long-Term Rewards: Access Long Service Leave after just 5 years of service.
The appointment will be in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award and Council’s policies and conditions of employment. The salary commences at $1,242.40 per week plus Award allowances, with progression up to $1,371.30 per week plus Award allowances dependent upon skills and experience.
