Where you'll be working:
The Central Sterilising Department (CSD) at John Hunter Hospital relocated to its new purpose-built department on Level 2, North Block, in July 2026. The department has been designed and constructed in accordance with National Standards, providing a modern, efficient environment to support the delivery of high-quality sterilising services.
In addition to servicing John Hunter Hospital, the department provides staff and consumables to the Belmont and Calvary Mater Central Sterilising Departments.
The department currently employs approximately 50 staff, including Sterilising Technicians, a Loan Set Coordinator, an Equipment and Repairs Officer, Day and Afternoon Shift Supervisors, and an Educator/Quality Manager, all of whom report to the CSD Manager.
The service currently operates 24 hours per day, Monday to Friday, and 16 hours per day on weekends and public holidays. The operating hours are planned to increase to a full 24 hours a day, 7 days a week later in the year, when the Theatre Endoscopy Service Transfers to CSD.
The CSD provides essential sterilising services to 15 operating theatres, with planned expansion to support 22 theatres, in addition to servicing approximately 90 internal and external customers. The department operates in a high-volume, fast-paced environment where efficient workflow, quality assurance, and timely service delivery are critical to supporting patient care.
About the role:
As a Sterilisation Technician, you will reprocess a variety of medical and surgical equipment for specialties including Orthopaedics, Trauma, and Neuro, adhering to statutory requirements and departmental policies. Your expertise will also support our external customer services. You will report to the CSD Manager, Education and Quality Manager and Shift Supervisor/Team leaders.
The department holds a team afternoon tea once a month, workload permitting, to promote team engagement and wellbeing.
Study leave is available to support attendance at approved workshops, conferences, and other professional development activities relevant to the role.
