About 99 Bikes / Pedal Group
Launched in 2007 from a tiny Brisbane shop that could only fit 99 bikes, we've grown into Australia's largest bicycle retailer — now spanning Australia, New Zealand and the UK as part of the Pedal Group, with over 2 million Club 99 members. Our mission is simple: to be The World's Most Approachable Bike Shops. Pedal Group also includes our distributor Advance Traders (Merida, Cube, Pedal and more), and together we're driven by our purpose of enriching mind, body, earth or soul through the freedom of riding — balancing purpose with profit.
Why We’re Different:
- We Build Business Around People: We promote from within relentlessly. Whether it's moving a star performer to a new city or helping a bike builder rise to GM of our NZ operations, your growth is our priority.
- Profit Meets Purpose: As a proud Certified B Corp, we balance business with doing good. We've donated over $3.85M to employee-chosen charities, power 70% of our shops with solar, and even pay our team to ride to work.

About the role
Your Next Step: This is a true 2IC position designed for a Senior Accountant ready to elevate their career toward Financial Controller responsibilities. Partnering directly with our Finance Leader for AU & NZ, you will serve as a vital right hand, ensuring balance sheet integrity and driving high-level reporting while supporting the wider team.
Hands-On Impact: Operating on a 13-Stage financial calendar, you won't just be reviewing from the sidelines. You will dive into the detail every four weeks, producing reconciliations and owning a portfolio of key accounts. You'll be in the trenches with the team, maintaining absolute accuracy across our AU and NZ entities.
Retail and Beyond: At our core, we are an inventory-led business. To thrive here, you'll bring a passion for understanding how stock moves from global suppliers to our shop floors. You will also look beyond the spreadsheets, partnering with department heads and Store Managers to help them master their financial performance.
Lead by Example: While this role does not have direct reports, you will be a senior voice in the finance function, naturally mentoring team members and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Safeguard Financial Integrity: Collaborate with our Finance Leader to ensure absolute balance sheet precision for both AU and NZ
- Take True Ownership: Manage a specific portfolio of account reconciliations each Stage, upholding our high standards for punctuality and detail.
- Dive into the Detail: Work side-by-side with the team during Stage-end to produce timely financial reports; you will be doing the work, not just reviewing it.
- Narrate the Numbers: Assist in crafting management reports and analysis that transform raw data into clear, actionable insights for senior leadership.
- Drive Future Growth: Play an active role in our annual budgeting cycles and ongoing forecasting efforts.
- Refine Our Processes: Maintain robust internal controls while relentlessly seeking out opportunities for automation and efficiency gains.
- Partner with the Business: Empower Store Managers and department heads by helping them master the financial drivers behind their operations.
- Support and Mentor: Serve as a technical expert and guide for the finance function, fostering the growth of your colleagues without formal direct reports.
- Provide Store Support: Act as a key point of contact for finance & system queries from our retail stores, providing responsive and clear support to our frontline teams.
- Ensure Compliance: Assist the Finance Leader in managing external audits and staying ahead of all regulatory and tax requirements.
- Step Up as 2IC: Step in to provide leadership coverage when the Finance Leader is away, acting as a steady, trusted presence for the team
About You

- Professional Services Background: Previous experience in professional services, particularly within an audit environment is favourable.
- Operational & Technical Expertise: You have a solid technical accounting foundation and advanced Excel/Sheets skills. You are comfortable being hands-on with balance sheet reconciliations and reporting cycles rather than just reviewing from the sidelines.

- Retail & Business Acumen: You understand the financial drivers of a stock-driven retail business and or have experience in a business that has similar dynamics. You can partner effectively with non-finance leaders, translating complex data into transparent, simple, actionable business insights.

- Ownership & Integrity: You show up, own your work, and follow through. Dependability, honesty, and integrity are at the core of how you operate.
- Resilience & Problem-Solving: You thrive in fast-paced environments, staying calm and solution-oriented when priorities shift or challenges arise.
- Continuous Improvement: You have a growth mindset, always seeking ways to improve accuracy, efficiency, and automated processes within the finance function.
