Primary objective
Improve recreational fishing sector outcomes through the effective delivery of the NT Recreational Fishing Development Plan
2023–2033, stakeholder engagement programs, and strategic advisory processes that support informed decision-making and
sustainable fisheries management.
Context statement
NT Fisheries is responsible for the sustainable management and regulation of the Northern Territory’s aquatic resources. The
Partnership, Programs and Engagement Team is responsible for coordinating and leading the division’s community engagement,
delivering the Sea Country program and maintaining strategic partnerships with key stakeholders. This role will work closely with
the fisheries operations, science, and compliance teams, as well as with key external stakeholders including recreation, tourism and
commercial fishers and Traditional Owners.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Develop, coordinate and deliver engagement and extension programs that support NT Fisheries’ strategic objectives.
2. Develop advice, correspondences and briefings for the Minister, Director of Fisheries, advisory committees, and key client
groups on emerging issues in the recreational fishing sector.
3. Build and maintain effective professional relationships with stakeholders across government, targeted recreational fishing
groups, community groups and local communities.
4. Prepare written reports summarising and evaluating the effectiveness of engagement efforts to provide insights,
recommendations and evidence-based findings to support the sustainable management of aquatic resources.
5. Coordinate and participate in events, consultations, and outreach activities that promote collaboration with the recreational,
commercial and fishing tourism sectors, including providing executive support to the Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee
by preparing agendas, background papers, meeting organisation, minute taking and reporting.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven capacity to build and maintain productive working relationships, including the ability to work well within a team,
across teams, between government agencies, as well as with the broader Territory community, representative stakeholder
groups and community organisations.
2. Proven experience in effective engagement with people of various cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including demonstrated
ability to prepare information for a range of audiences.
3. Demonstrated experience in project management, delivering engagement activities, with strong organisational, ICT and
records management skills, with the ability to work independently, show initiative and meet deadlines.
4. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver engagement plans and outreach activities for natural resource management
initiatives or similar fields.
5. Demonstrated ability to negotiate stakeholder issues, manage conflict and foster collaboration across multiple user
groups to achieve balanced, shared outcomes
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to contribute to strategic, program and policy development
including preparation of high-level briefings, reporting requirements, and ministerial correspondence.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in communication, engagement, natural resource management or a related field.
2. Knowledge of Northern Territory fisheries and the key stakeholder groups.
