Where you'll be working
This is gastroenterology advanced training position for current trainees who are interested in a specialty year focusing on out-patient (ambulatory) hepatology. Trainees applying for this position should have completed at least two years of gastroenterology advanced training prior to 2027.
This position may also be suitable for current gastroenterology trainees who will obtain their fellowship from the RACP this year and wish to complete a further year of hepatology training.
Selection for these will be via a centralised panel. Position available with NSW for 2027 are:
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Westmead Hospital
Royal North Shore Hospital
Non-core advanced trainee in their 3rd year (or beyond) of training, specialising in the management of chronic liver disease and liver failure, as well as the referral for and management of liver transplantation
Clinical responsibilities:
- Inpatient care
- Consultation service
- Out-patient clinics
On- call responsibilities:
- ED referrals for new admissions, complications in ward patients.
- Weekend ward rounds: general gastroenterology patients and/or transplant patients (where applicable).
- Organise inter-hospital transfer of transplant patients, fulminant liver failure patients and bleeding patients from regional centres.
- Endoscopy lists.
- Fibroscan clinics.
- Co-ordination of multi-disciplinary meetings.
Research responsibilities:
- Participate in clinical trials as sub-investigator, reviewing patients as required.
- Perform clinical research projects, with the generation of at least one abstract of work at a level that would result in the work being presented at a National or International Meeting.
- Self-directed study.
- Attendance at conferences and relevant meetings where possible. Ambulatory care clinics.
Supervision and training:
- Supervise junior medical staff.
- Train JMOs in procedures such as abdominal paracentesis and thoracocentesis.
- Supervise and tutor medical students in their gastroenterology rotations:
Administration:
- Contribute to the preparation of morbidity and mortality audits.
- Assist consultants in co-ordinating endoscopy lists.
- Organise, attend and participate in journal clubs, departmental meetings, radiology meetings, histopathology meetings.
- Prepare the on-call roster for the advanced trainees, if necessary.
Quality improvement:
- The advanced trainee is required to assist and participate in the development and implementation of Quality Activities, ensure timely discharge and will have responsibility for discharge coding. He/she will be involved in the provision of departmental statistics, in keeping with that of the Department.
Other key responsibilities:
- The Hospital provides the trainee with an email account. It is the trainee’s responsibility to check their email as this is how Hospital Administration and Senior Staff will be communicating relevant information on a daily basis.
- When on-call the Advanced Trainee must be available and contactable at all times.
