The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a key member of the Civil Law Practice, you’ll play a pivotal role in our Women’s and Youth Bail Advocacy Programs, delivering high-quality, culturally safe civil law advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and young people, helping prevent avoidable bail refusals. Shape and grow ALS’s civil law services, supporting holistic justice that truly meets community needs. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-quality civil law advice, assistance and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and young people in contact with the criminal justice system.
- Deliver holistic, culturally safe, and trauma-informed services, including referrals to legal and non-legal supports.
- Collaborate closely with Bail Advocacy Program staff and support junior team members to ensure effective service delivery.
- Lead community legal education initiatives and contribute to policy, advocacy, monitoring and reporting activities.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the ALS Civil Law Practice, including internal processes and documentation.
- Represent ALS at external forums, comply with organisational policies, and undertake travel and other duties as required.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated solicitor who understands and respects the cultural, social, and historical context that shapes the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring both technical excellence and a deep commitment to community and justice. Key strengths include:
- A NSW Practising Certificate with a minimum of 2 years' experience in advocating and representing clients in civil law matters.
- Demonstrated cultural competency and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and practices.
- Proven advocacy skills, including representing clients before courts and tribunals, with knowledge of the criminal justice process and clients in custody.
- Experience supervising staff, with strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work autonomously and adapt in a start-up environment.
- Current NSW driver’s licence and willingness to travel; Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and community sector experience highly regarded.
