Primary objective
The VRU Team Leader has a primary responsibility for the professional, efficient, consistent and reliable customer service to
all visitors entering the Berrimah Correctional Centre (DCC), whilst also providing training and support to the VRU Team and
is a point of contact for complaints, queries and feedback from clients.
Context statement
The VRU is the first point of contact for the Berrimah Correctional Centre. The VRU is responsible for processing all visitors
to the facility in a professional and timely manner. This position is required to function within a custodial environment and
come into contact with custodial staff and prisoners on a daily basis.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership, mentoring, training and skills development to the VRU team to promote a high level of customer
focussed service.
2. Manage the effective coordination of staff resources for the VRU including development of staff rosters.
3. Monitor, develop and implement systems, policies and practices that improve service delivery, including reviewing the
current Standing Operational Procedures to ensure they are up to date.
4. Liaise with relevant staff and senior management in regard to visits including addressing queries and complaints.
5. Coordinate visitor bookings in IOMS and process visitors to the facility ensuring bookings are within the correct
limitations.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High standard of effective communication and negotiation skills with a focus on achieving outcomes.
2. Demonstrated experience in overseeing staff, including demonstrated skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, leadership
and teamwork.
3. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the capacity to prioritise competing requirements, work
under pressure and meet critical deadlines while maintaining quality control.
4. High level of professional ethics and self-management with the proven ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain
strict confidentiality and display integrity and discretion.
5. Ability to engage, influence and guide peers with positive attitude towards change.
6. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement systems, with a focus on continuous improvement and commitment to
service delivery.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
