Our global team of more than 15,000 employees is united by our values and strengthened by our employee-owned culture. The Role
Due to a growing pipeline of work, we're looking for a Fire Protection Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services team in Sydney.
Supporting the delivery of complex building services, mission critical and data centre projects across Australia and the broader region, this opportunity is ideally suited to an engineer with approximately 2-6 years' experience who enjoys hands-on design, technical problem solving and digital delivery.
We're seeking someone who enjoys taking ownership of fire protection designs and developing coordinated BIM models directly within Revit. This role is well suited to an engineer who wants to remain closely connected to the design process while continuing to build technical consulting expertise.
What You’ll Be Doing
As part of our Fire Protection Engineering team you will:
-
Contribute to the design and delivery of fire protection systems from concept through to construction.
-
Prepare engineering calculations, reports, specifications and design documentation.
-
Design and coordinate sprinkler, hydrant, hose reel, fire detection and alarm systems, and special hazard systems.
-
Develop and maintain fire protection BIM models and coordinated Revit documentation.
-
Work directly within multidisciplinary BIM environments to coordinate fire protection services with architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines.
-
Support authority approvals, design reviews and technical assessments.
-
Assist in resolving technical design challenges and multidisciplinary project interfaces.
-
Participate in site inspections, contractor coordination and construction-phase services.
-
Continue developing your technical capability, project delivery skills and industry knowledge.
What Makes This Role Different?
This is an opportunity to work on projects that sit at the forefront of Australia's digital infrastructure market.
Fire Protection Engineers at HDR are embedded within multidisciplinary engineering teams, providing direct exposure to major data centre and mission critical projects from concept through delivery. Working alongside specialists across engineering and architecture, you'll contribute to complex projects while continuing to build your technical expertise and consulting capability.
We're looking for engineers who enjoy being closely connected to the design process and taking ownership of their technical deliverables. You'll have the opportunity to develop and coordinate Revit models directly, working hands-on within BIM environments rather than being removed from the design process.
Supported by experienced local leaders and HDR's global network of specialists, you'll gain exposure to innovative engineering solutions while accelerating your technical and professional growth.
What You’ll Bring
We’re looking for someone who is:
-
Passionate about fire protection engineering and delivering quality technical solutions.
-
Comfortable taking ownership of design tasks and project deliverables.
-
Interested in developing their expertise across complex building services and mission critical projects.
-
A proactive problem solver who enjoys working through technical challenges.
-
Detail-oriented and committed to producing accurate, coordinated and compliant design deliverables.
-
Collaborative and comfortable working within multidisciplinary teams.
-
Curious, growth-oriented and eager to learn from experienced engineers and project leaders.
-
Enthusiastic about BIM workflows and digital engineering delivery.
Ideally, You’ll Have
-
A relevant degree qualification.
-
Approximately 2-6 years' experience in fire protection engineering or building services consulting.
-
Experience designing fire protection systems including sprinklers, hydrants, hose reels, fire detection and alarm systems, and special hazard systems.
-
Proficiency in Revit and BIM workflows, with the ability to directly develop and coordinate fire protection models as part of the design process.
-
Working knowledge of the National Construction Code (NCC) and relevant Australian Standards including AS 2118, AS 2419, AS 1670 and AS 1851.
-
Experience preparing technical reports, engineering calculations, specifications and design documentation.
-
Experience using AutoCAD, Revit and hydraulic calculation software such as Hyena or similar.
-
Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating designs across disciplines.
-
Understanding of construction-phase services, site inspections, testing and commissioning activities.
-
Membership of, or eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia.
-
Holding, or working towards, FPAS Accreditation will be highly regarded.
-
Data centre or mission critical project experience will be highly regarded.
