About us:
Youth Justice (YJ), a division of the Department of Justice and Community Safety, is responsible for the supervision of children and young people in the criminal justice system. This includes young people aged 10-18 years and young adults who are serving their sentence in the YJ dual track system. We work with young people in the community, or in the custodial setting, to reduce their offending and partner with others to provide genuine opportunities for children and young people to turn their lives around.
The Regional General Manager of Youth Justice for the Barwon South West Region leads the management and oversight of a continuum of community-based services including:
- Diversion initiatives such as our Children's Court Youth Diversion Program
- Youth Justice Court Advice Services
- Culturally safe and responsive Aboriginal Youth Justice services, and
- Case management of children and young people subject to court orders
As this role leads the Barwon South West Region, a presence across both the Geelong and Warrnambool locations is essential. Travel to other regional locations, including YJ Custodial environments may also be required.
About the role:
The position works closely with a variety internal and external stakeholders who work with children and young people involved with, or at risk of entering the criminal justice system. In building relationships with key agencies and stakeholders, the YJ Regional General Manager influences strengthened diversionary responses, promotes opportunities for the rehabilitation of young offenders and ensures case management practices are evidence-based and responsive
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing expert advice to the Executive Director, Commissioner and other Departmental Executives as required
- Providing leadership to staff, promoting the effective integration of related services and programs into DJCS
- Developing plans and strategies consistent with the business plan and allocating appropriate resources to locations
- Maintaining high quality case management practices, ensuring YJ statutory obligations are met and properly recorded
- Preparing reports for Senior Executives and Ministers of Government at an advanced and professional level to resolve complex and sensitive issues.
About you:
- Significant expertise in the statutory Youth Services context and the delivery of community-based services responding to children and young people.
- Extensive experience in the case management of complex and/or high-risk individuals/young people within the relevant legislative, practice and procedural frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing cross functional operations and determining service delivery resource allocation.
- Creates a culture that supports and respects the individuality of others and recognises the benefits of diverse ideas and approaches
- Develops long-term and multi-phased plans to implement complex strategies to build buy-in from key internal and external stakeholders
