Details: Step into a role where your work directly protects people, landscapes, and biodiversity. As a Field Officer in the ACT Parks and Conservation Service’s Fire Management Unit, you’ll be part of a team on the frontline of bushfire preparedness and land management—delivering fuel reduction, maintaining fire trails, and supporting critical emergency response operations across the Territory. This is a hands-on, purpose-driven role where every day contributes to a safer and more resilient Canberra.
You’ll work across some of the ACT’s most diverse environments, combining practical skills with teamwork and initiative. From operating machinery and conducting prescribed burns to managing hazards, controlling weeds and pests, and contributing to cultural and ecological burning practices, your work will shape the health and sustainability of public lands. With opportunities to be involved in frontline firefighting, search and rescue, and incident management, this role is ideal for candidates who thrive in dynamic, outdoor settings and want to make a tangible difference.

Be currently able and prepared to undertake and maintain the Arduous level of the national fire fighting task based assessment (fire fitness)

Be currently able and prepared to undertake a kinetic physical assessment

Be prepared to wear a uniform and work a shift roster, weekends, public holidays or evening shifts at any PCS worksite on an 'as needs' basis

Possess a current manual drivers licence;
This is a physically demanding role, requiring endurance and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads, bending, climbing, and driving a variety of vehicles. Field Officer applicants must meet the requirements of a medical and must pass the national task-based fitness assessment to the arduous level and annually thereafter. Notes: This is a temporary position available from 1 September 2026 for up to 12 months, with the possibility of permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
