An exciting opportunity exists to join the Nepean BPT Network as a Basic Physician Trainee.
The Nepean BPT Network may offer 1- or 2-year contracts (as required for completion of their length of training) to applicants who have completed their time in an accredited BPT role. All other applicants will be offered 3-year contracts, subject to change, with final rankings from the application process and service provision requirements determining the length of training contract that will be offered. Previous or current registration with RACP in non-BPT roles does not guarantee a 2-year contract.
Please also note that once a BPT offer is accepted, any application you make for any subsequent round BPT position during the 2027 AMR campaign will not be considered whilst you are holding that offer.

Nepean has full accreditation with the RACP as a Level 3 Hospital. Nepean offers a broad range of medical specialties including an ICU term.

BPTs may be required to undertake rotations to sites within the Network.

Ryde Hospital provides both inpatient and community services. It is a 180 bed acute care Hospital. Acute services include emergency, elective surgery, day surgery, maternity, orthopaedics, cardiac and intensive care. Non-acute inpatient services include aged care and rehabilitation, drug and alcohol and mental health.

Bathurst Base Hospital is a 100 bed hospital with 7 bed ICU/CCU, 25 medical beds. Full medical/surgical/paediatric/anaesthetic/ICU consultant rosters. Principal referral centres are Orange, Nepean and RPA.

Tweed Hospital is a regional referral, level 5 base hospital providing care to over 45,000 patients every year.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.
Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants. Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures. BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the up to three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.
BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:

Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans.

Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers.

Document the progress of patients in multiple settings.

Prescribe medications tailored to patients needs and conditions.

Transfer care of patients.
-
Choose, organise and interpret investigations.
-
Assess and manage acutely unwell patients.
-
Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures.
Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

If the applicant's registration has conditions, all conditions will be assessed by the health agency to determine if the applicant can meet the essential requirements of the role.
A minimum of three ( years post- graduate experience or two (- full years of postgraduate experience in public hospital service by the start of the clinical year.

Eligible for or holding current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and intent to obtain Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

ALS certification or equivalent by the start of the clinical year.

Valid Working with Children Check.

Cleared National Police Check.

To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection criteria

MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

This role requires eligibility for or current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and intent to obtain Fellowship of the RACP.

Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment with proven ability to apply clinical knowledge and concepts in practical solutions.

Demonstrated teamwork and problem-solving skills within a multidisciplinary team.

Demonstrated time management and prioritisation skills within the context of multiple competing priorities.

Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, teaching, research, quality improvement and clinical leadership in medicine.
