The Aboriginal Health Worker – Palliative and Cancer Care plays an important role in strengthening the connection between Aboriginal communities and the public health system. In this role, the worker supports Aboriginal patients and families navigating cancer treatment and palliative care, ensuring services are culturally safe, respectful, and responsive to the cultural, social, and emotional needs of Aboriginal people.

Provide culturally safe support to Aboriginal patients and families navigating cancer treatment and palliative care within a public hospital setting.

Work as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure care planning recognises cultural needs, family connections and social and emotional wellbeing.

Identify the health and social support needs of Aboriginal patients and connect them with appropriate hospital and community-based services.

Provide culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal men, women and families navigating serious illness, including during periods of grief and loss.

Are You the Right Fit?
The ideal candidate is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with strong cultural knowledge and a deep understanding of the needs of Aboriginal patients and families, enabling the provision of culturally safe and respectful care. They bring demonstrated case management experience, including the ability to assess health and social needs and coordinate referrals with community and support services. With a solid understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people—particularly relating to grief, loss, and social and emotional wellbeing—they approach their work with empathy and cultural sensitivity. Strong communication and relationship‑building skills allow them to work collaboratively with patients, families, clinicians, and community services to support positive health outcomes.
