This position is designed to provide broad exposure to anaesthesia and perioperative medicine and is well suited to junior doctors considering a future career in Anaesthesia or other critical care specialties. Successful applicants will develop clinical skills in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, pain management and other elements of critical care, while gaining insight into the scope of practice and career pathways within Anaesthesia. Previous experience in anaesthesia is desirable but not essential.
The training year will consist of eight months at RPAH in Sydney and four months at Dubbo Base Hospital, undertaken as four-month rotations. This structure provides valuable experience in both a large tertiary referral centre and a regional hospital environment. Clinical duties will primarily be undertaken in the operating theatre setting under close consultant or provisional fellow supervision. Trainees will participate in the perioperative care of surgical patients and gain experience in:
Administration and monitoring of anaesthesia
Postoperative pain management for surgical patients
Assessment and management of patients in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Preoperative assessment of patients in the pre-admission clinic
Participation in the after-hours Acute Pain Service
Throughout the year, trainees will work closely with experienced anaesthetists and will be supported in developing procedural skills, clinical judgement, and a strong foundation in safe perioperative practice. Opportunities to participate in research, audit and quality improvement projects within the departments are encouraged. This role provides an excellent opportunity for junior doctors to gain valuable experience in clinical anaesthesia while exploring potential career pathways in the speciality.
