What you’ll be doing
In our IT team, we’re the engine room that keeps Virgin Australia running smoothly, blending technical excellence with that signature Virgin spirit. We’re curious problem solvers who move fast, think smart and own our impact. Every day is a chance to make things better, smarter and more uplifting for our people and our guests.
As our Data Analyst – Technology Enablement, you’ll turn complex portfolio and financial data into clear, practical insights that help leaders make better decisions.
Sitting within the Portfolio Orchestration and Reporting team, you’ll support reporting, modelling, forecasting, resourcing insights and analysis across our technology portfolio. Your stakeholders will range from Delivery Leads through to the Chief Information Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
This is a varied role for someone who enjoys being the go-to person for data. You’ll conduct financial deep dives, analyse portfolio performance, track project go-lives, examine permanent and contractor workforce costs, and support month-end activities. Much of the core modelling and allocation work will be completed in Excel, alongside maintaining and improving our Power BI reporting suite.
You’ll also play an important role in improving how we work. As an AI champion, you’ll explore practical ways to use approved AI tools, Python and SQL to automate analysis, improve month-end processes and make reporting faster, more accurate and more useful.
As part of your role, you will:
- Gather, validate and analyse financial, resource and portfolio data from a range of sources
- Build and maintain advanced Excel models, including project allocation and workforce charging models
- Undertake financial analysis across actuals, forecasts, spend, accruals, variances and project costs
- Analyse portfolio trends, including contractor and permanent workforce composition and upcoming project go-lives
- Produce clear, decision-ready insights for senior leaders and portfolio stakeholders
- Maintain and continuously improve Power BI dashboards and supporting Excel and PowerPoint reporting
- Support end-of-month activities, including resource allocation, forecasting, compliance and ad hoc analysis
- Maintain the portfolio-level delivery map and provide data to support planning and sequencing decisions
- Help transition reporting into new portfolio and work-management tools
- Use approved AI tools, Python and SQL to automate repetitive work and improve the quality and consistency of reporting
- Treat reporting as a product by engaging users, gathering feedback and continually improving the experience.
You’ll be great in this role if you…
You’re naturally curious, commercially minded and comfortable moving between detailed analysis and the bigger picture. You enjoy working with large, sometimes imperfect datasets and can turn them into insights that are clear, accurate and easy for others to act on.
You’ll bring strong financial modelling experience and advanced Excel capability, with the confidence to interrogate data, challenge assumptions and explain what is driving performance. You’ll be highly organised, able to manage several priorities at once and comfortable supporting multiple projects and stakeholders in a fast-moving environment.
You will also have:
- Demonstrated experience in data analysis, reporting, financial modelling or a similar analytical role
- Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas, modelling and data manipulation
- Experience working with financial data, including actuals, forecasts, spend and variance analysis
- Experience creating, maintaining or improving Power BI dashboards and reports is advantageous
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking capability
- The ability to gather data from multiple sources and translate it into meaningful insights
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial and technical information to non-technical audiences
- A continuous-improvement mindset and an interest in automation
- Strong time-management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities
- A self-starting approach, high personal accountability and the confidence to work autonomously.
Experience with Python, SQL, AI-enabled analysis, portfolio reporting or project delivery will be highly regarded. Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Commerce, Accounting, Data, IT or a related discipline would also be beneficial, but are not essential.
