The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.
Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.

What you'll be doing
WSLHD - JMO - Provisional Fellow - Anaesthesia
- The regional PF will spend much of their time within the main perioperative complex. They will be exposed to at least two days a week (out of a four day working week) of surgical specialities where regional anaesthesia is highly sought after. These include orthopaedic, vascular, breast surgery, ophthalmology, upper GI, colorectal, thoracic and transplant lists.
- General (non-regional related) lists to maintain exposure to a wide array of surgical specialities.
- The PF will also be allocated to the Acute Pain Service (APS) team approximately once/month. They will be the most senior member of the team and have an experienced APS nurse, registrar and SRMO to assist them. They may be called by the APS team at other times to assist them with providing regional anaesthesia on the ward or emergency department if required. They will be expected to assist and perform relevant blocks (with the supervision from a regional anaesthesia trained consultants as required) such as thoracic epidurals, fascia iliaca blocks/catheters, truncal blocks/catheters and various upper limb and lower limb blocks. Of note, we cater for a large number of patients with ribs fracture in which regional analgesia often plays a critical role in reducing their morbidity and mortality.
- Supervising more junior trainees and consultants in performing regional anaesthesia (often towards the second half of the year).
- Running the regional workshop teaching sessions for the anaesthetic department approximately every two months with a regional consultant supervising. This will involve a didactic presentation follow by real time scanning on volunteers.
- Involvement in other regional anaesthesia teaching sessions as part of the Westmead Anaesthesia short and long course held once/year and the yearly ‘hands-on’ Regional scanning workshop held at the end of the year.
- Highly encouraged to participate in regional anaesthesia related QA programs, audits and other research activities.
- Maintaining a close working relationship with the regional anaesthesia consultants in the department and attendance at the regional anaesthesia journal club meetings held every two months where interesting cases are discussed and relevant recent research papers are presented in an informal setting.
