THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a senior engineering leadership role, reporting to the Portfolio Director and leading the engineering integration and asset management coordination function across Transgrid's Delivery Projects project portfolio. The portfolio spans high-voltage substation and transmission line projects, and this role is the engineering authority across all of them.
You lead a team of 3 to 5 project and design professionals and work across OEM designers, delivery partner designers and Transgrid's internal engineering, asset management, network operations and maintenance teams. The mandate is broad: manage the full design process from concept to technical close-out, ensure every project is compliant with National Electricity Rules and Transgrid standards, coordinate the asset management interface so nothing falls through the gap between delivery and operation, and provide the technical leadership that keeps the Portfolio Director and project teams making sound decisions.
This is not a role where the engineering sits at arm's length from delivery. You are expected to have deep technical knowledge of high-voltage primary plant and substation and transmission line design, apply it practically to real project problems, and lead the people and processes that turn that knowledge into compliant, high-quality infrastructure. A DAY IN THE LIFE
The work sits across strategy, technical governance and hands-on delivery coordination. Here is how it generally flows.
- Engineering Integration and Technical Oversight: Leading the coordination of engineering, asset management interface and design functions across the Delivery Projects project portfolio. You make sure designs are consistent, compliant with National Electricity Rules and Transgrid standards, and fit for the operational environment they are going into. When design providers submit work, you have the processes in place to review it efficiently and the technical authority to push back when it is not right.
- Asset Interface Coordination: Managing the relationship between the project team and Transgrid's asset management team. You handle the approval process for standard deviation items, coordinate meetings and workshops to resolve interface issues and make sure each project is compliant and ready for commissioning. You work closely with Asset Management, Network Operations and Maintenance teams to ensure nothing falls through the gap between delivery and operation.
- Design Tracking and Quality: Running the processes that track design progress from concept through to post-IFC updates and technical close-out. You identify issues early, make sure document and quality review cycles are working and keep design delivery aligned with project schedule and budget.
- Technical Leadership and Advice: Being the person the Portfolio Director and project team come to for sound technical guidance on substation design, transmission line design, and the operational and commercial implications of technical decisions. You assess project options, lead investigations and studies, and provide input on specifications and scoping that keeps delivery teams grounded in engineering reality.
- People Leadership: Leading a team of 3 to 5 project and design professionals. You set expectations, develop capability, manage performance and build the kind of team that gets things done well without needing close supervision. You also work across OEM designers, delivery partner designers and Transgrid internal teams to keep technical alignment across the full design and delivery chain.
- Risk and Compliance: Identifying and managing design and technical risks across the portfolio, ensuring Safety in Design reviews are completed to Transgrid requirements and that compliance processes are documented and tracked. You are accountable for making sure each project is technically ready for commissioning.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
Delivery Projects are among the most technically complex in Transgrid's delivery portfolio. They involve major substation works, significant transmission line programs and assets that will operate on the NSW transmission network for decades. The Engineering Manager is the person responsible for making sure the engineering behind those assets is right from the design quality coming in from external providers, to the technical readiness of each project at commissioning, to the alignment with the asset management standards that govern how the network is maintained and operated over its life.
ABOUT YOU
You have 15 or more years in high-voltage infrastructure project delivery and the technical depth to lead engineering integration across a complex portfolio of Delivery Projects substation and transmission projects. You are as comfortable in a stakeholder workshop as you are in a technical design review, and you can hold both the strategic and the detailed view at the same time.
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering — Civil, Electrical or a related discipline.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in high-voltage infrastructure project delivery with strong exposure to design, construction or asset management on substation and transmission line projects.
- Extensive knowledge of high-voltage primary plant and equipment and the ability to apply that knowledge to real design and delivery problems.
- Experience managing the full design process from concept through to post-IFC updates, technical completion tracking and close-out.
- Solid understanding of National Electricity Rules requirements and Transgrid or comparable network owner standards.
- Experience managing the interface between project delivery and asset management teams, including standard deviation approvals and ISO55001 alignment.
- Leadership experience managing and developing teams of project and design professionals in a matrixed environment.
- Strong risk assessment and compliance management skills, including Safety in Design processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to provide clear technical advice to project directors and facilitate workshops across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Comfortable with travel to project sites and Transgrid locations across NSW.
Good to have:
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) certification.
- Post-graduate qualifications in Project Management, MBA or equivalent.
- Design and construction experience across both substation and transmission line infrastructure.
- Familiarity with PLS-CADD, CYMCAP, CDEGS or similar transmission line and substation design tools.
- Knowledge of functional design areas including earthing, insulation coordination, corona, safety clearances, induction and rating calculations.
- Experience working within or alongside a regulated utility environment with regulatory reporting obligations.
