What's the role?
News24 is seeking a highly motivated Politics Editor to join our Digital News team. Reporting to the Editor, Digital, you will be responsible for leading and delivering authoritative political coverage across News24.com.au and our digital platforms.
In this senior role, you will bring your deep political knowledge, robust source networks, and seasoned editorial judgment to drive journalism that informs the public, challenges the status quo, and holds power to account across federal, state, and international politics.
What is the role:
Setting and driving the political coverage agenda for News24 across digital platforms, ensuring content is timely, original, accurate, and impactful.
Leading, mentoring, and supporting political reporters and correspondents, providing clear editorial direction and feedback to elevate their journalism.
Making senior editorial decisions regarding story selection, angles, framing, and prioritization across federal, state, and international political coverage.
Spearheading digital coverage of breaking political developments, including elections, parliamentary sessions, policy announcements, and press conferences.
Overseeing the publishing and visual presentation of all political content across News24.com.au, utilizing CMS and digital publishing tools.
Collaborating closely with digital producers, video, and social teams to ensure stories are supported by strong visuals and platform-appropriate presentation.
Upholding the highest editorial standards, identifying and addressing quality issues promptly, and ensuring strict legal compliance at all times.
Working across a 24/7 roster, which includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays, to meet the demands of a continuous news environment.
Ensuring compliance with the Editorial Code of Conduct, Standards of Business Conduct, Social Media Policy, and all applicable News Corp and ANC legal policies.
Who are you?
You possess deep and current knowledge of Australian federal and state politics, key political figures, parliamentary processes, and international affairs.
You are a confident editorial leader capable of mentoring a team and making sound, senior decisions under the pressure of tight deadlines.
You have a rigorous approach to investigative journalism and apply strict standards to fact-checking, source verification, and legal compliance.
You maintain a broad, diverse, and reliable network of political contacts, including politicians, press secretaries, advisers, and industry stakeholders.
You are an exceptional writer and communicator, capable of producing and editing authoritative, clear, and concise political copy and headlines.
You are highly proficient in digital publishing workflows, CMS platforms, metadata conventions, and SEO practices.
You are a strong collaborator who works constructively across text, video, and multimedia formats to deliver integrated and impactful content.
