This position serves as an introduction to Emergency Medicine training. Its main purpose is to give the Trainee a broad experience in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. It may include terms in Paediatrics, Intensive Care and Anaesthetics. Other terms of interest including Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Psychiatry can be explored if fulfilling training requirements and is determined on staff level capacity.
We also have special skills terms including Ultrasound and Medical Education which are accredited by ACEM, with Clinical Toxicology to commence in mid-2027.
We have a strong and vibrant Research and Quality Improvement Unit which aims to translate clinical research into changes in clinical practice and highly encourage junior medical involvement in all stages of different projects or trials.
The Emergency Department also serves to support completion of the Certificate and Diploma of Emergency Medicine through the ACEM. It also serves to accredit training in other training programs, such as for the College for GPs or the College for Rural and Remote Medicine, and terms appropriate to this training can be sought. The position is also recognised by the RACGP for prior learning, including paediatrics.

What you'll be doing
- Assessing, investigating and initially managing patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
- Taking an active role in the resuscitation room, running complex resuscitations under supervision from the Emergency Physician.
- Communicating clearly to patients and their relatives where appropriate, the findings of assessment and the plan of management.
- Undertaking teaching, education and various other quality assurance activities carried out within the department
- Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.
Where you'll be working
- Nepean Emergency sees approximately 75,000 patients per year, of which about 36% are admitted to hospital. Approximately 20% of these patients are under 14 years of age.
- Staffed by 50 Emergency Physicians providing up to 5 consultants per shift from 0700-2400, with Advanced Trainee cover overnight.
- Consultant special interests including retrieval, toxicology, ultrasound and medical education.
- Designated Regional Trauma Centre by the Institute of Trauma and Injury Management
- Accredited by ACEM for 3 years of advanced training in Emergency Medicine as well as the paediatric log book.
