Primary objective
To ensure the security, safe custody and welfare of prisoners, through the effective supervision of subordinates and the meeting
of Agency statutory obligations, policies and philosophies.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Build positive workplace culture through effectively supervising subordinate staff to ensure the efficient day to day running
of the sector, provide performance feedback, manage attendance and other personnel matters; and provide on-the job-training
as necessary.
2. Support the Chief Correctional Officer to manage the sector to ensure legislative accountability requirements are met and
promote prisoner engagement in employment and educational activities.
3. Demonstrate and promote the highest standards of integrity, conduct and dress and bearing.
4. Respond to and take charge of incidents in accordance with emergency procedures.
5. Monitor and account for journals and registers to ensure accurate, timely and relevant information is recorded.
6. Assist subordinate staff with the preparation of institutional reports including the accurate use of IOMS database.
7. Liaise with other operational areas ad sectors, outside organisations and members of the public where appropriate.
8. Conduct physical inspections of the sector to ensure policies and procedures are being implemented and health, hygiene and
safety standards are being met.
9. Support and lead organisational changes as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Successful completion of Certificate IV in Correctional Practice
2. Considerable operational experience in the operation of a correctional institution and working the legislative requirements.
3. Proven ability to positively and effectively manage staff including training and mentoring staff for skills development, providing
performance feedback (both formal and informal); positively addressing performance or conduct concerns of subordinate staff
in a timely manner; and maintaining a positive team morale.
4. Demonstrated ability to lead or implement change effectively.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and liaise with people at all levels, orally and in writing.
6. Excellent skills in managing own time and competing priorities, efficient use of resources, effective delegation of tasks and
excellent skills in providing leadership and direction to subordinate staff.
7. Proven commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Anti-Discrimination and Occupational Health and Safety
principles.
8. Sound knowledge and demonstrate practical application of relevant legislation, Correctional Services policies and philosophies.
9. Demonstrated knowledge of the special needs of Aboriginal prisoners, an ability to interact effectively with people of diverse
cultures and knowledge of contemporary best practices consistent with the custodial institution.
Desirable
1. Satisfactory progress towards acquiring Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.
2. Completion of or satisfactory progress towards completing a relevant diploma.
