About the role
Reporting to the Head of Network Control, the Manager Operational Safeworking is responsible for providing expert supervision, support, and governance across all safeworking practices and interfaces that impact the Operations division.
This role requires strong expertise in regional rail corridors and signalling systems, enabling the provision of accurate and timely advice on complex safeworking issues across regional, metropolitan, and freight interfaces.
You will play a key role in developing capability within the organisation by coaching and mentoring regional Signal Control teams. In addition, you will act as the primary point of contact for all safeworking
Key accountabilities include:

Assess the operational impact of projects, major works, and network access requests.

Review, interpret, and approve key operational and safety documents, including Safe-working Circulars and Train Operating Notices.

Provide expert advice on network changes, infrastructure, signalling, and operational processes.

Approve safety plans for planned and unplanned works, ensuring safe access to the network.

Act as a key liaison between Train Control and Safeworking teams, ensuring smooth collaboration.

Mentor the Regional Signalling team to build capability and meet business needs.

Develop and implement strategies to enhance rail safety and operational performance.
Location & Travel Considerations
This role is based in Melbourne CBD (Bourke and Flinders Street) and includes leadership of regional teams across locations such as Swan Hill, Echuca, North East Victoria, and Seymour. Occasional travel to these regions is required to support operational and team needs.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

Demonstrated experience working with, and applying, the ONRSR Book of Rules.

Demonstrated experience delivering senior-level outcomes within the rail sector.

Working knowledge of Train Control (TC) and signalling systems within the rail environment

Able to commit to a Monday to Friday role, with a requirement to respond to safe working incidents outside standard working hours.

Hold a valid safe working qualification or willingness to renew
