Are you passionate about climate resilience and community wellbeing? The City of Sydney is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a motivated postgraduate or mature final-year undergraduate student (minimum level) to contribute to a high-impact climate adaptation initiative.

About the Project
The Protecting the Community from Urban Heat project aims to support vulnerable communities during extreme heat events. You will help develop best-practice guidelines and community-focused initiatives to enable the City to support residents, including priority communities, during heatwaves and hot days. The project will support individual development experience within the built environment with on ground, community-connected initiatives and planning.

What You’ll Do
Scope of work to include:

Conducting research on best practice approaches to cool places and heatwave response
Analysing government policy and contributing to a City of Sydney position
Supporting development of operational guidelines and tools
Collaborating with internal stakeholders across sustainability, community, and property teams
Designing or contributing to community education and awareness initiatives, including communications campaigns

Who We’re Looking For
Postgraduate students studying (or with experience in):

Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, Project Management, or Social Sciences

You will demonstrate:

Strong autonomy, research, and analytical skills
Ability to synthesise complex information clearly
Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality outputs
Effective communication, report writing and teamwork skills

Details

Type: Internship for academic credit (unpaid)
Start: Semester 2, 2026
Location: Hybrid (minimum 2 days/week at Town Hall House, Sydney CBD)
Hours: As required by your university unit
