Primary objective
Under the direction of the Principal, the Maintenance Officer will provide maintenance to the buildings and property of Yirrkala School in a
functional, neat, and orderly condition and ensure that the school is maintained according to school and Department of Education policies and
procedures and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
Context statement
Yirrkala School is located in East Arnhem Land in the community of Yirrkala. The school caters for students from Preschool to Year 12 and
supports further education and vocational training for adults. The school uses a bilingual learning approach, teaching in and through the Yolngu
Matha dialect of Dhuwaya and English. It is located 20km, from the township of Nhulunbuy in Northeast Arnhem Land.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings and school grounds that require technical, general
handyman, or tradesman skills as required. Oversee the satisfactory completion of repairs referred to outside contractors.
2. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school premises are in a neat and orderly condition. This will include maintaining toilets and wet
areas in a clean and hygienic state during school hours. Actioning potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising
judgement in rectifying the problem. Complete OH and S scheduled checks.
3. Responsible for the daily unlocking and locking of school premises, reporting immediately any unusual activity during inspection e.g. vandalism,
break in.
4. Assist with moving furniture and fittings, collecting mail, display and take down school crossing flags, freight and delivering stores received
into the school to the appropriate areas.
5. Undertake relevant request by school staff, including minor repairs, design, and construction of learning aids for classrooms.
6. Undergo the required duties of the maintenance of School grounds, to follow a mowing and garden maintenance schedule as required and
arrange maintenance of tools and equipment.
7. Coordinate the maintenance of school vehicles.
8. Maintain the school’s asset register and liaise with the Business Manager to track assets retained in the school.
9. Work in conjunction with the Co-Principals and Business Manager to provide recommendations and planning of improvements around the
school.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Ability to work under general supervision either individually or in a team environment, performing a variety of tasks, which require knowledge
of standards, practices, procedures, and skills obtained through considerable training and experience that can be used within his/her school
maintenance officer duties.
2. Demonstrated ability to carry out inspections of school facilities and the capacity to undertake minor maintenance of buildings and fittings.
3. Ability to work within the framework of the work, health, and safety guidelines.
4. A relevant trade certificate or recognised equivalent trade experience, or technical knowledge of practices, procedures, and skill, obtained
through considerable training or experience that can be used within the duties of the Maintenance Officer role.
5. Current NT driver’s licence.
6. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school staff and students.
7. Ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines and work independently.
8. Current Ochre Card Clearance.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated experience in gardens/ground maintenance.
2. Previous experience in a school environment.
3. LR or MR Drivers Licence.
