Senior Manager, Data & AI Governance
A rare opportunity to build the data and AI governance capability behind a major public-interest program, at an organisation whose work directly protects everyday Australians.
Our client is an established, nationally significant organisation operating in a highly regulated, compliance-sensitive environment. As they expand their use of data and artificial intelligence, they are committed to doing it responsibly, ethically and fairly. This newly created role owns the guardrails that make that possible.
Reporting to the Head of Data & Analytics, you will lead the end to end data and AI governance lifecycle, from frameworks and policy through to evaluation, assurance and ongoing oversight, and lead a small team that is set to grow. There is genuine scope to define the vision for data and AI, direct exposure to senior leadership, and a program regarded as leading in its sector.
What you'll do
- Own and maintain the data and AI governance frameworks, aligned to regulatory developments and Australia's AI Ethics Principles
- Lead data quality standards, data classification and a federated operating model, building the program from the ground up
- Support the evaluation and assurance of AI tools, testing for accuracy, bias, reliability and fitness for purpose
- Integrate data and AI governance with privacy, information management and information security, including the automated decision-making transparency reforms commencing December 2026
- Drive cross-functional governance forums, coordinating assessments and preparing clear recommendations for decision makers
- Maintain enterprise inventories of approved data and AI tools and key data assets
- Lead, coach and develop the team
What we're looking for
- Extensive experience across data governance, AI governance and information management, with genuine strength in at least two and data governance as a core strength
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing governance frameworks in a regulated or compliance-sensitive environment
- Experience running or contributing to cross-functional governance committees
- A strong people leader who coaches other leaders and is comfortable with autonomy
- Excellent stakeholder management, with the ability to influence senior and legally-minded audiences
- A clear communicator who simplifies complexity and builds trust
- Someone who takes the time to understand an organisation before shipping ideas, and right-sizes the answer
- Been there, done that, and able to hit the ground running on maturity assessments, tooling and operating models
