Product Development Engineer
IMRA Surgical
Location: North Melbourne, Melbourne VIC
Work type: Full-time, on-site
About IMRA Surgical
IMRA Surgical is a global leader in surgical education and medical simulation. We design and manufacture highly realistic synthetic organ and torso models used to train surgeons in advanced robotic and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Our mission is to help surgeons build competence before operating on patients, supporting safer surgery, fewer complications, faster recovery, and reduced burden on the healthcare system.
We work with leading hospitals, surgeons, universities, training centres, and global MedTech companies to develop next-generation surgical training models.
About the Role
We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to join our product development team in North Melbourne.
This role is responsible for designing, prototyping, testing, and delivering high-quality synthetic surgical models, from early concept through to pilot production and product release.
You will work closely with surgeons, educators, medical device companies, manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams to develop models that are anatomically accurate, surgically realistic, manufacturable, and commercially valuable.
This is a hands-on, full-time, office-based role suited to someone who enjoys solving complex product problems, working with physical prototypes, and collaborating across technical and clinical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop synthetic organ and torso models from concept through to pilot production.
- Translate clinical, anatomical, and customer requirements into clear technical design inputs.
- Work with surgeons, educators, and MedTech clients to define new or customised model requirements.
- Lead rapid prototyping, iterative design refinement, bench testing, and simulated surgical validation.
- Support the development of bespoke model solutions for strategic partners, hospitals, training centres, and medical device companies.
- Manage multiple concurrent product development projects, including timelines, milestones, documentation, and cross-functional coordination.
- Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams to support product launch and production readiness.
- Prepare and maintain detailed project documentation, including design inputs, testing records, design changes, release protocols, and technical specifications.
- Support technical sales activity by contributing to product demonstrations, customer discussions, and scoping of custom development projects.
- Identify new materials, manufacturing methods, design approaches, and product features that improve realism, performance, manufacturability, or cost.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across the product lifecycle, including customer feedback, next-generation planning, and design-for-manufacture.
- Maintain confidentiality and contribute to IMRA’s intellectual property protection strategy.
- Represent IMRA at industry conferences, trade shows, clinical workshops, and customer engagements as required.
About You
You are a practical, technically strong engineer who enjoys building, testing, improving, and launching physical products. You are comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where design quality, anatomical realism, manufacturability, and customer outcomes all matter.
You will ideally bring:
- A degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, product design engineering, industrial design engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience in product development, prototyping, design-for-manufacture, or technical project delivery.
- Strong practical problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to physical product development.
- Strong anatomy knowledge.
- Experience with CAD, prototyping, testing, and design documentation.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with technical, clinical, manufacturing, and commercial stakeholders.
- Good project management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and timelines.
- A high level of attention to detail and a strong documentation mindset.
- An interest in healthcare, surgical training, medical devices, robotics, or simulation.
Experience in medical devices, anatomical modelling, simulation, soft materials, polymers, hydrogels, silicone, 3D printing, moulding, advanced manufacturing, and surgical robotics would be highly regarded.
Why Join IMRA?
- Work on products used by surgeons and major medical technology companies around the world.
- Be part of a fast-growing Australian company operating in robotic surgery education and medical simulation.
- Contribute to products that improve surgical training and patient outcomes.
- Work in a hands-on product development environment with a strong link between design, manufacturing, and real clinical use.
- Join a team building globally recognised synthetic surgical training models.
