Primary objective
As a member of the school leadership team, provide innovative educational leadership in the implementation of literacy
programs in both English and Warlpiri, and lead a team of staff in planning, development and delivery of a two-way learning
program that optimises learning and engagement of all students in a cross-cultural environment.
Context statement
Nyirripi School is committed to engaging students in a rich, culturally responsive learning environment, where they learn
through Warlpiri and English in a bilingual setting. Students range from Transition to Secondary School. Nyirripi is located
about four and a half hours out of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert. Nyirripi School has a strong connection to the
community. The traditional owners and residents of Nyirripi are Warlpiri. The bilingual program is systematically used as a
medium to support learning across the curriculum and On Country Learning.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide educational leadership to school staff relating to effective teaching practice, systematic curriculum delivery and
student assessment and reporting.
2. Collaborate with school leadership, LEAD Committee, community members and regional officers to develop curriculum
resources, and mentor staff in the delivery of the school’s Walpiri and English language programs.
3. Model best practice in Literacy pedagogy and support teachers of literacy to improve pedagogy, with a focus on
improved learning outcomes.
4. Support staff to develop quality literacy programs in Walpiri and English that are evidence informed.
5. Collaborate with staff to develop student voice, and build student capability to interpret, respond and display data to
understand their own learning.
6. Manage collaboration of effective practices of Literacy and Bilingual Education across schools. This involves attending
Jinta Jarrimi and working with other Warlpiri schools across the Walpiri Triangle.
7. Continue to develop knowledge and understanding of Warlpiri culture and language.
8. Undertake an appropriate teaching load.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated capacity to model best practice teaching and learning within a bilingual, two-way learning environment.
2. Proven ability to build the capacity of self and others through mentoring of literacy curriculum, pedagogy, assessment,
and the use of data to inform teaching and learning.
3. Demonstrated ability to understand contemporary educational research relating to school improvement in particular
trauma informed practice and explicit instructional model.
4. Demonstrated ability to build a shared culture of high expectations, while developing and maintaining effective
interpersonal and cross-cultural relationships within and beyond the school community.
