About the Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced Engineer or Senior Technical Officer – Precision Mechanical to support maintenance activities across a range of critical mechanical systems on the Collins Class submarines as part of the Full Cycle Docking (FCD) program. Reporting to the FCD Engineering Manager, you will work on high‑precision mechanical systems including exhaust and induction valves, periscopes, control surfaces and propulsion line components.
This role is suited to someone with strong experience in mechanical systems incorporating hydraulically actuated valves and precision‑manufactured components. Based in Osborne, SA, this is a full‑time position at Engineer or Senior Technical Officer level, offering the opportunity to contribute to complex, safety‑critical engineering outcomes in a highly regulated environment.
Responsibilities
- Interpret design baselines and develop engineering instructions to support maintenance activities.
- Collaborate with Operations teams to fault‑find and troubleshoot mechanical system issues.
- Prepare engineering documentation including specifications, sketches, test procedures, work instructions and engineering reports.
- Conduct hazard and risk assessments to evaluate safety and operational impacts of engineering solutions.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to early‑career engineers, including graduate cohorts.
- Lead or contribute to root cause analysis investigations.
- Interpret standards to manage component obsolescence and compliance requirements.
- Review and update maintenance instructions and supporting documentation.
- Provide technical direction across the mechanical design and maintenance lifecycle.
- Perform intermediate‑level engineering calculations to assess and validate solutions.
About you
- Degree‑qualified in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
- Diploma‑qualified candidates with relevant experience will be considered for Technical Officer pathways.
- Experience supporting maintenance of mechanical systems and precision components.
- Strong analytical capability with sound technical engineering knowledge.
- Proficient in modern Windows environments and Microsoft Office tools.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work autonomously within a multidisciplinary engineering and technical team.
- Experience with hydraulically actuated systems or precision‑machined components is highly regarded.
Eligibility
This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.
