In this role, you'll:
Join our Mechanical Workshop team at Russell Vale, where you'll play an important role in ensuring the vehicles, plant and equipment that support road maintenance operations across the Illawarra region remain safe, compliant and ready for service.
You'll act as the link between workshop tradespeople and asset management functions, helping to support maintenance activities. Using your mechanical aptitude and strong organisational skills, you'll help ensure our fleet and equipment are maintained to the highest safety and operational standards.
The Works Assistant Grade 3 – Asset Inspector will also be responsible for:
- Performing a wide range of routine and complex labouring/manual tasks, including using a variety of small plant and powered/non-powered hand tools to assist with the completion of work activities.
- Assisting in solving routine problems that arise, referring to standard guidelines and manuals and collaborating with Supervisors, Team Leaders and Mechanical Tradespeople to resolve complex issues.
- Providing assistance to team members, leading the work output of a small unit as required, developing capability and ensuring team tasks are completed effectively.
- Participating in team meetings, planning and activities to support continuous improvement and achieving work goals.
- Understanding and maintaining knowledge of WHS legislation, policies and procedures, assessing and controlling risks, record management and industry requirements to minimise risk and model safe work behaviour.
- Understanding and following environmental procedures, including identifying, reporting and addressing simple hazards, using work methods that minimise environmental risk, applying appropriate controls to prevent damage, and managing waste and equipment disposal in line with legislative, business and operational requirements.
- Completing work activities to quality standards by following established procedures, conducting measurements throughout and on completion of work, comparing outcomes against engineering plans and specifications, and completing required reports to ensure tasks are performed correctly.

This is an ongoing full-time role located at Russell Vale.
TfNSW take the WH&S and the management of fatigue of our employees seriously therefore to be eligible for this role it is a requirement that you must reside within 70 km of Russell Vale.
You may be required to work outside of normal working hours and you may also be required to travel throughout the region and work at locations away from home on occasion. Allowances relating to working away from home and accommodation apply.
About you
You're someone who enjoys working with vehicles, machinery and equipment and takes pride in keeping assets safe, compliant and ready for operation.
You bring experience from a stores, logistics, fleet, workshop or asset management environment and have a practical, hands-on approach to supporting maintenance activities.
You're mechanically minded, with a genuine interest in vehicle maintenance, equipment reliability and identifying defects or maintenance requirements before they become larger issues.
You're comfortable working closely with workshop teams and operational staff to keep assets performing at their best.
You're highly organised, have strong attention to detail and are confident maintaining accurate records using asset, inventory or maintenance management systems.
You take ownership of your work, work proactively and understand the importance of keeping critical operational assets well managed and available for service.
You hold a current Construction Industry White Card and a current unrestricted NSW Motor Vehicle driver’s licence.
A Forklift Licence and/or Medium Rigid (MR) Licence will be highly regarded.
You may be required to work outside normal working hours, and you must be prepared to travel to various work locations away from the base station.
