About the Role
This is a rewarding opportunity to join Legal Aid NSW’s Domestic Violence Unit (DVU), a specialist, interdisciplinary team supporting clients experiencing domestic and family violence.
As a Senior Financial Counsellor, you will deliver trauma-informed financial counselling to clients facing complex financial abuse, while also mentoring and supporting other financial counsellors to build capability across the organisation. You will work closely with lawyers, caseworkers and other professionals to provide coordinated, client-centred support that helps people regain financial stability and independence.
This role combines direct client impact with leadership, giving you the opportunity to guide best practice, support complex casework, and contribute to meaningful outcomes for vulnerable communities.
About You
You are an experienced financial counsellor who:
Has worked with clients affected by family violence and financial abuse
Supports clients with complex financial issues (e.g. coercive control, debt) and helps them build independence
Can mentor and guide other financial counsellors on complex cases
Shows resilience and empathy when supporting clients in distress, and helps others build these skills
Works well in a team and supports the Team Leader on financial abuse matters

Essential Requirements
Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing roles) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary roles)
Undertake relevant pre-employment checks such as Criminal Record Check, and Conduct Service Check
Have 5 years’ minimum relevant experience
Have Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling) and the Diploma of Financial Counselling
Have Accreditation with Financial Counsellors’ Associate of NSW INC
Meet the requirements to be a Professional Supervisor as set out in the National Standards For
Supervision adopted by the Australian State and Territory Financial Counselling Associations
Have demonstrated experience working as a financial counsellor
Hold valid NSW driver's license
