We’re seeking a motivated and community‑minded Environmental Health Officer to help safeguard public and environmental health across Boroondara on a fixed-term basis (until September 2027).
About the role
Working within a dedicated team, you’ll play a key role in maintaining high standards of health and safety by conducting inspections, investigating hazards, and supporting local food and health businesses to comply with legislation. This role is integral to ensuring our community remains safe, resilient and well‑informed, and includes participation in a rotating on‑call roster.
About you
You’re an enthusiastic professional with a strong understanding of public health legislation and a passion for protecting community wellbeing. You communicate clearly, build strong relationships, and approach complex situations with sound judgment, integrity, and empathy.
Your ability to work collaboratively, manage competing priorities, and provide exceptional customer service helps you excel in a fast‑paced regulatory environment. You hold qualifications in Environmental Health and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you’ll apply your expertise as an authorised officer to undertake inspections, assess compliance, and support food and public health safety across the municipality. You’ll respond to community health complaints and incidents, investigate potential risks such as food adulteration or infectious disease, and take appropriate action through education or enforcement.
You’ll maintain accurate records, prepare reports and notices, and represent Council in legal proceedings where required. You’ll also contribute to health promotion initiatives, assist in the training of team members and students, and support continuous improvement through updating procedures, registers and systems. Your work will help enhance community safety, ensure compliance, and strengthen the delivery of public health services.

Employment Requirements
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or equivalent including eligibility to be a member of Environmental Health Australia.
- Conversant with, and able to interpret, all legislation and standards relating to public health.
- Applicants must have the right to work in Australia.
- Preferred applicants will be required to undergo a National Police Record Check and hold a valid Working with Children Clearance.
