## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Toolmaker to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, and maintaining precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and related equipment to exacting tolerances. You will work closely with engineering and production teams to support efficient and high-quality manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a methodical approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to precision workmanship.
## Key Responsibilities
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements for manufactured components
- Measure, mark out, and prepare metal stock and castings using a range of precision gauges and layout tools
- Operate and programme conventional and CNC machine tools — including lathes, mills, grinders, and EDM equipment — to shape and form metal and other materials
- Inspect and verify the accuracy of manufactured parts and assemblies against specified tolerances using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, CMMs, and verniers
- Test, adjust, and modify tooling and components to meet design specifications and performance requirements
- Fabricate, assemble, and fit tool components, ensuring correct alignment, clearances, and surface finish throughout the build process
- Apply protective coatings and finishes to tooling and pattern sections, and mark assemblies to indicate correct assembly sequence and orientation
- Maintain, service, and repair existing tooling, dies, moulds, and fixtures to minimise production downtime
- Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and production staff to resolve tooling issues and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and maintenance activities in line with quality management systems
- Adhere to all workplace health and safety requirements, including the safe operation of machinery and correct use of personal protective equipment
- Support the training and mentoring of apprentices or junior toolroom staff as required
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a recognised apprenticeship or trade qualification in Toolmaking, Engineering, or a related discipline (Certificate III or higher)
- Proven experience working as a Toolmaker in a precision manufacturing or production environment
- Proficient in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Demonstrated ability to operate a broad range of conventional and CNC machine tools to a high standard
- Strong working knowledge of precision measurement techniques and instruments
- Sound understanding of metals, alloys, and material properties relevant to toolmaking
- Experience in the fabrication and repair of dies, moulds, jigs, and fixtures
- High level of attention to detail and a commitment to producing work within tight tolerances
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with quality management systems and ISO standards
- Current knowledge of WHS/OHS legislation and safe working practices
## Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate IV or Diploma in Engineering or Advanced Manufacturing
- Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g. SolidWorks, Mastercam, or similar)
- Exposure to EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) processes and wire cutting
- Experience working with injection moulding or die casting tooling
- Forklift or overhead crane licence
- First aid certification
