About the role
Reporting to the Safety & Hygiene Superintendent, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Safety Specialist to join the HSE team at the Lytton Refinery. In this lead role, you will develop and coordinate Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) projects and programs, supporting safe work systems, incident and injury management, and occupational health initiatives. You will play a key part in ensuring OH&S systems are effective in practice, while providing high-level support to the Safety & Hygiene Superintendent and acting in the role when required.
As the refinery’s focal point for OH&S, you will provide technical expertise to ensure compliance with Work Health & Safety legislation and lead the identification, assessment, control, and evaluation of workplace hazards. You will partner with senior leaders, employees, and contractors to deliver expert guidance and coaching, and use your knowledge of refining processes and plant-specific risks to develop and implement practical risk mitigation strategies that protect our workforce.
Key responsibilities
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory, and policy requirements, managing site activities to meet Work Health & Safety standards.
Foster a strong safety culture by proactively managing health, safety, and environmental risks through regular field presence, inspections, and coaching.
Review, update, and develop policies and procedures aligned with WHS legislation and best practice, contributing to the Operational Excellence Management System.
Provide expert OHS guidance across operations, maintenance, office, and contractor teams, including incident investigations and corrective action planning.
Lead and support HSE planning and execution for major Turnaround & Inspection (T&I) events, including safety management plans, contractor onboarding, and high-risk work oversight (e.g., confined space and working at heights).
Monitor, audit, and report on refinery WHS performance (leading and lagging indicators), delivering strategic training programs and recommending actions to continuously improve safety outcomes.
About you:
You are a Safety Professional with extensive experience in high-risk environments, passionate about consulting, advising, and driving tangible safety improvements and outcomes. You have a proven track record in facilitating training, developing systems, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
With a genuine passion for safety, you are able to influence stakeholders at all levels, holding both yourself and others accountable. Your strong problem-solving skills enable you to identify root causes and implement effective, practical solutions to mitigate risks.
Qualifications & Experience
Demonstrated proven experience in a safety professional role within manufacturing, mining, construction, refining, or similar high risk industries.
