Cairns Hospital is the largest major referral hospital in Far North Queensland, providing specialized health services and comprehensive care to patients from the Torres Strait to Tully. Our population is 260,000 with First Nations people making up 14% of the region's population. Cairns Hospital provides a range of specialist outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services from its CBD site on the Cairns Esplanade and has over 500 inpatient beds.
The Emergency Department (ED) provides a front door to the health facility and, for many people, their primary contact with the health care system. Emergency services are responsible for the reception, triage, initial assessment, stabilisation, and management of patient of all age groups presenting with non-acute/acute and critical/urgent illness and injuries. It is also responsible for the referral to ongoing care.
The Cairns Hospital Emergency Department provides CSCF level 5* emergency services to the Cairns and Hinterland and Torres and Cape Region, supporting a total of 53 facilities between CHHHS and TCHHS, along with transfers from Papua New Guinea. The ED provides 24-hours 365 days service for adults and children from admission to discharge, for a range of urgent and non-urgent complaints.
About your role:
Your main tasks may include (but are not limited to):
Attend to routine personal cares, including assistance with activities of daily living.
Recognising and communicating changes in patient's conditions to the RN and formulate next steps of care. Provide direct patient care in the emergency department's lower acuity areas for both adult and paediatric patients within an overseeing Registered Nurse (RN).
Working within a team nursing model.
Completing patient risk assessments for admitted patients in the ED.
