About Koala Bytes
Koala Bytes is a robotics and coding education provider running programs across four Sydney North Shore locations (Hornsby, St Ives, Chatswood, Epping). We teach LEGO Junior, LEGO Senior, and VEX IQ to primary and early high school students, following a 9-session term structure aligned with NSW school terms.
The Role
We're launching VEX IQ as a core program and need a curriculum designer to build out the structure and content for our next term of VEX IQ classes. You'll work closely with our founder to extend and refine the existing 9-session framework — designing build challenges, programming tasks, and lesson sequencing that progress students' skills term over term.
Responsibilities
- Design a 9-session VEX IQ curriculum (build + programming components) suitable for students aged 8+
- Sequence content so skills build progressively across sessions and terms
- Create lesson plans, build instructions, and programming challenges using VEX IQ hardware/software (VEXcode IQ)
- Align activities with VEX IQ competition skills where relevant (driving skills, programming skills, robot game elements)
- Provide session pacing guidance and materials/equipment lists
- Collaborate on assessment checkpoints to track student progress
Requirements
- Must have hands-on experience with VEX IQ (coaching, competing, or curriculum design — RECF competition experience highly regarded)
- Familiarity with VEXcode IQ (blocks and/or text)
- Experience designing curriculum or lesson plans for kids aged 8–14
- Strong understanding of robotics/STEM pedagogy (e.g. gradual release: I Do / We Do / You Do)
- Ability to document instructions clearly (for instructors who may not be VEX experts themselves)
Nice to Have
- Experience with VEX IQ competition coaching or judging
- Background in teaching or instructional design
- Comfortable producing build/programming guides with diagrams or screenshots
Engagement
- Freelance/contract basis, project scoped to next term's curriculum (with potential for ongoing terms)
- Remote-friendly, with occasional sync with founder in Sydney North Shore
- Payment: [to be discussed based on scope — flat fee or per-session rate]
