We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical direction and shape the foundations of our modern, revenue-generating platforms at Cartology. This role demands a high degree of technical ownership, focusing on raising engineering standards and influencing our client-facing ecosystem's architecture. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic problem-solver, adept at balancing rapid delivery with long-term system health in a commercial setting. While highly collaborative, you must possess a leadership mindset, be able to navigate ambiguity, and take full accountability for the platform's success. This position is perfect for a platform-level thinker eager to move across the stack to solve complex challenges.
Drive the design and evolution of a scalable, resilient platform architecture, taking end-to-end accountability for major components.
Lead the instrumentation of the platform to drive data-informed decisions and proactively maintain system health using modern monitoring tools.
Contribute to high-level planning, technical documentation, and the selection of long-term technology choices.
Raise the bar for engineering standards and code quality through rigorous peer reviews and mentoring.
Balance technical debt with speed-to-market, making trade-offs to support a high-growth, revenue-generating environment.
Design and optimise generic, scalable integration patterns across the ecosystem (CRM, AdTech, CMS).
Partner with Product, Design, and Marketing to translate the business vision into a robust technical reality.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will possess a minimum of 8 years of commercial experience with a proven track record of developing and scaling large-scale, mission-critical web applications.
Deep technical proficiency in server-side technologies (Kotlin/Java, Spring Boot), software design patterns, and the design of complex, high-availability, service-based architectures and RESTful environments, alongside front-end development (React and Typescript).
Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), cloud platforms (preferably GCP), containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, and a deep commitment to TDD/BDD and automated testing.
System-level thinking and proven experience in architecting highly reliable systems, making the right trade-offs.
Proven experience with client-facing, revenue-generating systems, effectively balancing quality and commercial urgency.
Exceptional communication and documentation skills for conveying complex technical strategies to all stakeholders.
Expert understanding of agile practices and the ability to lead technical planning and estimation while working independently in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment.
Expertise in Kubernetes is preferred but optional.
Experience with data warehousing technologies like BigQuery is preferred but optional.
