We are seeking an experienced Leading Hand Fitter to join our dynamic team in Hexham, supporting our operations in steel recycling. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for day to day execution of maintenance activities and oversee a team of 12 employees This is a hands on role where you will work with large-scale equipment including hydraulics, pneumatics and processing equipment, ensuring reliability, safety, and efficiency across our site.
What you will be doing:
- Supervision of employees and contractors across all maintenance activities
- Offer leadership and technical advice to Trades/TA’s/Ops Workers
- Conduct daily toolbox talks/handovers and supervise daily shredder and site pre-start checks
- Efficiently react to breakdown situations with shredder or mobile plant promptly
- Actively participate in maintenance and planning meetings
- Ensure compliance of SAP maintenance work orders and communicate and update maintenance tasks through set medium
- Drive continuous improvements across maintenance practices, systems, and site safety performance.
- Ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with InfraBuild Safety Principles and safe Operating Procedures
Hours suited to work/life balance – 4pm to 12am Monday to Thursday, 3pm to 11pm on a Friday
Pay rate - $50.22 per hour + tool allowance + Leading Hand allowance + 15% afternoon shift allowance + 12% super + overtime with potential to grow your income as you build experience with us!

What you will bring:
- Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical fitting within steel, FMCG, heavy industry, or industrial engineering
- Supervisory/leadership experience, desirable
- Strong expertise with valves, pumps, actuators, hydraulics, and heavy plant equipment
- Proven ability to diagnose faults, and implement preventative maintenance strategies
- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement
- Computer literacy
- Tickets and other licenses are highly regarded (Forklift, Working at Heights, EWP)
