Casual Market Stall Salesperson (Weekends)
We're The Mushroom Guys, a small business growing gourmet mushrooms in Kardinya and selling them at Perth farmers markets every weekend. We're looking for someone to run our market stall. It's a genuinely good gig for the right person, and we want to be upfront about what it involves so it's the right fit for both of us.
A couple of things to know before applying
This is a retail sales role, not harvest work. It doesn't count as specified work toward Working Holiday visa extensions. Kardinya is metro Perth (postcode 6163), which isn't an eligible regional postcode, and it's worth checking that yourself before you apply. We're also not in a position to offer visa sponsorship.
You'll also need good conversational English, simply because the job is talking with customers all morning on your own.
The job
Casual, rostered week to week.
- Market mornings on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Some weeks it's both days, some weeks just one. You'll start at our Kardinya site around [5:30am], load the van, drive to [market], set up the stall, sell through the morning, then pack down and head back to square up stock and takings. Done by about [1:30pm] with the rest of your day free.
- Some weeks include a weekday at the Kardinya site, harvesting and packing, so you really know the product you're selling.
- Training is paid, and we won't throw you in the deep end. Your first few markets you'll work alongside us until you're comfortable running things yourself.
Being honest about what it takes
The alarm goes off early, the weather does what Perth weather does, and there's real lifting and setup involved. The selling side matters too. The stall does best with someone who enjoys chatting to people, can recommend what to cook and how, and brings a bit of energy even on a cold Sunday morning. We'll teach you everything about the mushrooms. The energy and reliability part comes from you. With one person running the stall, our customers are counting on you turning up, and so are we.
Availability
The one thing we can't flex: you need to be free every Saturday and Sunday morning on an ongoing basis, so we can roster you for either or both. Your hours will vary week to week, but that availability is essential.
It probably won't suit you if
- Your weekends are already spoken for by sport, another job or other regular commitments
- Early mornings really aren't your thing (every market day starts around 5:30am)
- You don't have your own car, as there's no public transport to Kardinya at that hour
- You'd rather work alongside a team, since after training this is a solo role
You'll need
- Sales or customer service experience in markets, retail, hospitality or anywhere else you've enjoyed winning customers over
- A current driver's licence and confidence driving a loaded van. Most of our vans are automatic, so a manual licence is a bonus rather than a must
- Your own reliable car
- To be comfortable with the physical side: crates, gazebo setup and a morning on your feet
- To be trusted handling cash and EFTPOS
- The legal right to work in Australia
What you get
Finished by early afternoon with your weekend still ahead of you, weekdays mostly free, weekend rates, regulars who'll know you by name, and more mushroom knowledge than you ever expected to have.
