Due to ongoing business growth and increasing operational requirements, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to join our production and manufacturing team on a full-time basis.
Position Overview
The Lead Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and optimisation of electrical transformers and associated equipment. The role requires strong technical expertise in transformer engineering, hands on testing capability, and leadership in production and quality processes.
Key Job Duties
- Lead the design and engineering of CVTs, isolation transformers, auto transformers, and other electrical transformer units.
- Prepare and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, winding diagrams, and general arrangement drawings for manufacturing and testing.
- Perform transformer specific calculations, including impedance, voltage regulation, losses, temperature rise, insulation coordination, and performance analysis.
- Select and specify electrical components, including CTs, VTs, protection relays, sensors, bushings, tap changers, fuses, breakers, and associated electrical hardware.
- Oversee transformer assembly, wiring, core assembly, coil winding, and final integration in the workshop environment.
- Lead transformer testing, including insulation resistance (IR), turns ratio (TTR), polarity, winding resistance, load/no load tests, high voltage tests, and functional verification.
- Analyse test results, identify deviations, prepare corrective action recommendations, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical support for fault diagnosis, rework, refurbishment, and performance optimisation of transformers.
- Ensure compliance with AS/NZS 60076, AS/NZS 3000, IEC standards, and internal quality and safety systems.
- Prepare engineering documentation, including test reports, BOMs, design files, technical specifications, and compliance records.
- Coordinate with production, procurement, quality assurance, and project teams to ensure timely and accurate project delivery.
- Support client communication, providing technical clarification, documentation, and engineering input when required.
- Contribute to workplace safety, ensuring adherence to WHS, LOTO, and HV/LV safety protocols.
Skills Required
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of transformer design principles, magnetic circuits, insulation systems, and thermal performance.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or similar design tools.
- Hands on experience with transformer testing equipment: Megger, multimeter, TTR tester, HV test equipment.
- Understanding of protection systems, including ELR, PTR, NER, CT/VT installation, and surge protection.
- Ability to interpret and apply AS/NZS and IEC standards.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in electrical systems.

Qualifications Required
Mandatory
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 5 Plus years of experience in transformer manufacturing & Testing, electrical equipment design, or power systems engineering.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Power Systems.
- Experience with HV/LV equipment, transformer testing, and protection systems.
- WHS certifications such as:
o White Card
o LVR/CPR
o High Voltage Awareness Training
Special Requirements (Industry Specific)
- Ability to work safely with high voltage equipment and follow HV/LV safety protocols.
- Experience with oil filled transformers, including oil testing and moisture control.
- Knowledge of insulation materials, varnish curing, and thermal class ratings.
- Familiarity with tap changer mechanisms (off load and on load).
- Ability to conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) with clients.
- Experience with root cause analysis (RCA) for transformer failures.
- Understanding of earthing systems, neutral earthing resistors (NER), and protection coordination.
- Experience working within ISO 9001 quality systems.
Additional Skills & Proficiencies
- Knowledge of partial discharge testing and insulation health assessment.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
- Ability to prepare technical proposals, cost estimates, and engineering justifications.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, and continuous improvement.
- Strong stakeholder communication for client meetings and technical presentations.
Salary - $90,000 - $100,000 plus super.

Pay: $90,000.00 – $100,000.00 per year
