What to Expect
Tesla is hiring Power Systems Engineers to expand our in-house modelling and simulation capabilities for large-scale energy storage, solar, and electric charging systems. You will engage in technical power system discussions with utilities, independent power providers, and system operators to influence system design and enable grid-scale deployment.
You will develop detailed models of our technology and control strategies for grid operations and microgrids of various sizes. The role is dynamic, fast-paced, and spans multiple domains: electrical engineering, controls, firmware design, and grid operations.
What You'll Do-
Serve as the technical expert in power flow, short circuit, and dynamic modelling discussions with customers. Clearly articulate power system analysis results and how Tesla’s technology interacts with the grid.
-
Continuously improve our internal modelling capabilities in power system analysis software, including microgrid applications with diverse interconnected resources and large-scale "macro" grid scenarios.
-
Collaborate with product design and firmware/software teams to keep models aligned with the technology roadmap.
-
Support the validation of control strategies by integrating models into real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing environments.
-
Work with product design to integrate power system requirements into product specifications, influencing system architecture.
-
Partner with customers and the business development team to build custom models.
What You'll Bring-
Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems.
-
Expertise in Modelling Tools: Proficient in at least two power system modelling tools (e.g., PSCAD, PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSLF, SSAT, TSAT, Matlab/Simulink).
-
Inverter-Based Generation: Experience in modelling and simulating inverter-based generation systems.
-
Engineering Studies: Experience conducting interconnection and engineering studies, including stability, protection coordination, harmonics, insulation coordination, arc flash, and ground grid analysis.
-
Control Theory: Strong understanding of control theory with the ability to implement PI control.
-
Collaboration: Ability to work cross-functionally with customers, engineering, business development, and deployment teams.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with Python or other scripting languages for automating simulation workflows.
-
Familiarity with NER grid codes.
