This role primarily focuses on supporting the QPWS Ranger-in-Charge and serves as the second-in-charge (2IC), acting as the primary contact when the Ranger-in- Charge is off shift. It requires a high level of autonomy, a thorough understanding of the work program, and the ability to develop skills as a Ranger-in-Charge. The position involves managing projects, overseeing administrative systems, and collaborating closely with QYAC Joint Management Rangers on joint management initiatives. These initiatives include pest management (such as feral pig and cat control programs), weed control (utilising various treatment methods for invasive species), and fire management (planned burning and wildfire response) to protect the National Park's key values and cultural landscape. The role also involves monitoring and addressing compliance matters in what can be a busy visitor location, particularly during weekends and holiday periods. Therefore, the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment is highly valued. Effective communication and engagement with on-island stakeholders and the community are critical aspects of the role. Additionally, the position requires coordinating emergency response activities in collaboration with other response agencies.
Given the responsibilities, this position is not suited for those seeking development opportunities. Instead, it requires a candidate with strong land management expertise who can immediately contribute, provide leadership, and mentor other staff on the island.
The position is based on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) which is classed as a remote location and the staff work 9-day shifts, with 5-days off to allow for transfer back to Brisbane and Rostered Days Off. Self-contained accommodation is provided at Ben Ewa Ranger Base with this position. Living on the island is beautiful, however access to shops and other services is limited with no island based medical services or schools. Barge services and a passenger ferry operates on a daily basis but timetabling means that daily commuting from the mainland is not feasible. As a unique work location, it is strongly encouraged to discuss the position and any questions you may have with the contact officer to assist in considering your suitability for the role.
