Westmead Hospital is a key facility within one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts. It is the principal referral hospital for the Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry. The services provided include Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation and Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital).
Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.
Intensive care service in Westmead hospital includes 36 general, and 10 post cardiothoracic surgical ICU beds. General ICU bed numbers have expanded by 50% in early 2020. Cardiothoracic ICU has also recently moved into a newly built ICU pod. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures.

WSLHD - SRMO - Intensive Care Medicine - Critical Care - Westmead Hospital
The Critical Care Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) role is for those who are interested in pursuing a career in Anaesthetics,Intensive Care Medicine or Emergency medicine. The purpose of the position is to provide medical care and support, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, that is consistent with the level of clinical training, skills and experience of the appointee. The SRMO will be assigned to 4 rotations throughout the year in the areas of Intensive Care (including cardiothoracic Intensive care), Anaesthetics and Relief. A 3-month term in Anaesthetics and 3-6 months in ICU is guaranteed. The SRMO is under the supervision of a Consultant Admitting Medical Officer (AMO) for all terms. Some teams also have supervision by a trainee and/or Post-Graduate Fellow.
There is potential for an additional anaesthetic term at Auburn which will be offered to 4 candidates on the basis of composite merit as determined by the interview panel
During the year, the SRMO is expected to participate in the assessment and management of patients under the supervision of senior practitioners whilst developing their knowledge and skills in clinical decision making and practice.
