The Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions is a key leadership position within the ODPP with the following responsibilities:
- Appear as leading counsel in complex superior court criminal trials and in appeals in the Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia including those of great significance to the community and to the development of criminal law;
- Active member of the ODPP leadership team;
- Provide high level advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions on legal and policy matters affecting the ODPP;
- Represent the Director of Public Prosecutions as required;
- Promote cooperation and communication among the various elements of the criminal justice system;
- Contribute to and influence the design and delivery of prosecution services within Queensland especially in light of changes to the criminal justice system;
- Provide professional leadership and mentoring; and
- Promote a performance focus to continuously improve the professional capability of staff.
Section 17 of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1984 (the Act) provides that the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions must be an Australian lawyer.
In addition to the mandatory requirement, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following key attributes:

- achieve results by providing expert advice regarding current practices in criminal law and sentencing;
- communicate with influence through expert level advocacy skills to conduct criminal proceedings and demonstrated capacity to effectively operate within a complex forensic environment;
- personal drive and integrity through demonstrated commitment to ethically conduct complex criminal trials and appeals; and
- cultivate productive relationships by designing organisational systems and managing people.
