This role is embedded in the Department of Endocrinology at Nepean Hospital and focuses on diabetes and obesity management in the NBMLHD. Clinics include alternating attendance at Blue Mountains and Lithgow hospitals for diabetes and endocrine clinics each Monday. They may also be asked to cover other Endocrine clinics at Nepean Hospital when other Trainees are on leave.
This role assists with clinical support, evaluation and reporting of the District’s Health Outcome Action Plan, including roll out of Too Deadly for Diabetes and Diabetes Screening, piloting of diabetes case conferencing and the building of a virtual obesity program. They are involved in research in the Family Metabolic Health Service linked to the service database, virtual obesity service build and key qualitative research projects. This role includes participation in most departmental teaching, administrative and academic meetings.
Participation in the general medical overtime roster is optional. Participation in the General Endocrinology weekend ward round roster is required (Saturday and Sunday on a 1:5-6 rotating basis at Nepean Hospital).
It is anticipated that this position can be credited towards an Elective year in Endocrinology Advanced Training. An ideal person for this role is someone who has completed an RCY and core year of Endocrinology Advanced Training, however other suitability qualified medical officers will be considered. The successful candidate will need to be flexible and willing to innovate, capable of working autonomously and in teams and a good written and verbal communicator. This role forms an important opportunity to train in metabolic health, with NBMLHD uniquely placed to provide comprehensive obesity and diabetes management training, and to get experience in health service design and evaluation, and in research.
What you'll be doing

Under supervision, provide a high standard of clinical care to patients in the area of Endocrinology to uphold quality service delivery whilst building on skills to become competent in the practice of Endocrinology in accordance with RACP advanced training requirements.

Co-ordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted under the care of the Endocrinology service.

Assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management of in and outpatients with endocrine disorders.

Undertake procedures relevant to the discipline of Endocrinology medicine including intravenous cannulation, insertion of nasogastric tubes, indwelling urinary catheters, arterial blood gas collection, dynamic endocrine testing (as appropriate). Performance of thyroid biopsies (as appropriate).
Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration in an appropriate category with the Medical Board of Australia

Completion of at least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and be eligible to undertake subspecialty training in Endocrinology in Australia.

This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.

Selection criteria

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration in an appropriate category with the Medical Board of Australia

Completion of at least four postgraduate years and passed written and practical components of the Divisional Clinical Exam (DCE)

Demonstrated interest in Endocrinology

Understands the role of the endocrinologist in complex clinical settings, identifying current major issues in endocrine research, clinical practice or health care delivery.

Excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team - diligence, punctuality, organisation, record keeping, time management, problem solving skills and team work.

Excellent communication (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and non-medical colleagues. Demonstrates ability to provide empathetic and expert clinical care

Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education, research and teaching. Commitment to continuous quality improvement.
