Primary objective
Provides high level leadership to guide the design, development and delivery of training packages for Authorised Officers and
school-based attendance and engagement staff to ensure practice is evidence based and consistent across the Northern Territory.
Context statement
Engagement Programs, Policy and Performance is responsible for developing strategic, evidence-based, and data-informed
initiatives to support priority students, and students at risk of disengaging from education, with place-based approaches that are
culturally appropriate, and trauma informed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead a team to design and deliver quality training and professional learning activities to support capability building of
corporate and school staff with respect to raising school attendance and improving engagement and re-engagement in
education and learning.
2. Lead a team to develop resources and materials to support uplift of staff capabilities and to strategically improve student
attendance and engagement in all Northern Territory Government schools.
3. Provide timely strategic advice and recommendations to enable DET to build its attendance and engagement evidence
base, monitor its professional development and staff performance, recognise its achievements, and identify trends and
risks that require remedial action and address emerging priorities.
4. Work collaboratively with schools, program areas, other agencies and key partners to drive innovation and continuous
improvement in engagement practices.
5. Prepare and present complex reports and briefings to senior management, in addition to preparing Ministerial, Cabinet
documents for government and plain language information for diverse audiences.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability in strategic planning, project management, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement for
development of training and professional development resources.
2. Demonstrated ability to work independently to a high standard, problem solve and provide effective leadership to a small team
to lead and manage a variety of strategic tasks in a complex environment and meet deadlines within time constraints.
3. Established time management skills with the ability to be proactive, work independently, exercise discretion, manage competing
priorities, and deliver quality, accurate products in tight timeframes.
4. Demonstrated extensive knowledge of contemporary attendance and engagement policy, political and legislative issues, trends
and developments relating to the programs and services of the Department of Education and Training.
5. High level interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to consult, collaborate, influence and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve
objectives and source timely, relevant information.
6. Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including producing concise briefings supported by data and for different
audiences.
7. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and flexible in dealing with a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
