Primary objective
Provide a specialist Medical Oncology service to include the care of both inpatient and ambulatory patients, within the Division of
Medicine, Royal Darwin Hospital, regional hospitals and remote communities; contribute to post graduate education at Royal
Darwin Hospital, including the supervision of trainees.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Conduct regular inpatient ward rounds and outpatient sessions incorporating teaching, and provide specialist opinion to
referring medical practitioners.
2. Participate in provision of specialist outreach services to Regional Hospitals and regional and remote communities.
3. Provide care and advice on the management of patients with oncological conditions to colleagues both within and outside the
specialty, and to those colleagues in geographically isolated centres in the Northern Territory.
4. Provide, with other members of the Division of Medicine, routine and emergency after hours care on a roster basis.
5. Provide an after-hours consultancy service to colleagues and junior medical staff.
6. Direct, coordinate, supervise, manage and evaluate the work of subordinate medical staff in the provision of patient care.
7. Participate in continuous medical education including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, professional development,
peer review, research, teaching, quality improvement activities and clinical audits as appropriate.
8. Liaise with other medical, paramedical and nursing staff and provide input into Unit and Hospital policies, for the ongoing
development of specialist cancer services in the Northern Territory.
9. Participate and supervise Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities, review and revise policies, procedures and
guidelines in line with national and international recommendations.
10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
11. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Current Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or eligibility for Fellowship.
3. Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high quality
service.
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work
environment.
5. Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.
