The Summary:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Solutions Engineering is responsible for developing high-quality mechanical engineering solutions for data centre projects, from early customer discussions and concept design through detailed design, construction and operational support. The role provides technical input to sales opportunities, develops initial PUE assessments, manages consultants and vendors, and reviews designs to ensure they are compliant, cost-effective, buildable and aligned with STACK’s Basis of Design and customer requirements. The role also supports research and development, resolves operational issues and mentors junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
Drive technical input and information for customer sales requirements.
Develop concept designs for early customer discussions and consultant briefing.
Develop initial PUE assessment to support site selection and test-fits.
Develop long lead equipment technical documentation and review vendor proposals.
Drive updates to internal BOD drawings and schematics.
Steer consultants using technical expertise in weekly activities to achieve design outcomes.
Working with consultants to ensure deliverables are compliant with customer requirements, technically correct, high quality, on time and buildable.
Review consultant designs against STACK BOD and customer requirements.
Reduce construction cost by identifying and removing over-engineering or conservatism.
Support construction activities via review and approval of workshop drawings.
Support the research and development activities to drive STACK’s next generation design solutions.
Support and mentor graduate and junior engineers helping develop STACK's future capabilities.
Provide technical input to operational issues to help identify root causes and potential solutions.
Must have Experience
Minimum 7 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including concept design, detailed design and construction support for complex infrastructure projects.
Strong knowledge of data centre or mission-critical cooling systems, including chillers, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, pumps, ventilation and control systems.
Experience developing concept designs, equipment specifications, PUE assessments, technical documentation and Basis of Design drawings.
Proven experience managing engineering consultants and reviewing designs for technical accuracy, compliance, constructability, quality and customer requirements.
Experience identifying value-engineering opportunities to reduce construction costs, remove over-engineering and improve design efficiency.
Good to have experience
Previous experience in data centre design, construction, commissioning or operations.
Experience reviewing long-lead equipment proposals, workshop drawings and vendor technical submissions.
Knowledge of energy-efficient cooling solutions, heat rejection systems, water usage optimisation and sustainable data centre design.
Experience supporting research and development of modular, standardised or next-generation mechanical solutions.
Experience mentoring graduate and junior engineers and providing technical input into operational incidents and root-cause investigations.
