About the role
The role of the Policy Advisor is to provide support to the Manager Fatigue and Human Factors with regard to shaping and delivering legislative, strategic and policy priorities related to safety management, with a focus on fatigue and human factors, within the national heavy vehicle law.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve strategic policy, procedures, regulations, and advice relating to Safety Management Systems (SMS), Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS), human factors, and heavy vehicle safety.
- Provide evidence-based policy advice and recommendations to support informed decision-making, regulatory effectiveness, and industry reform initiatives.
- Conduct research, analyse data, trends, and emerging issues, and prepare high-quality briefings, reports, correspondence, and policy proposals.
- Lead and manage projects and competing priorities to achieve strategic objectives and deliver measurable outcomes in a dynamic environment.
- Engage, consult, and collaborate with government agencies, industry stakeholders, committees, and working groups to influence policy development and implementation.
- Build and maintain strong professional relationships while delivering exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrate strong communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and analytical skills to achieve positive outcomes across local, state, and national stakeholder groups.
- Model professionalism, ethical behaviour, teamwork, and accountability while ensuring compliance with NHVR policies, procedures, and workplace health and safety requirements.

About You
To be successful in this role you will possess
- Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects or tasks to achieve specific objectives and deliver expected outcomes in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
- Demonstrated written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to negotiate matters to desired outcomes with internal and external stakeholders at local, state and national levels.
- Demonstrated research, analysis and problem-solving skills, evidenced by the ability to frame issues clearly and precisely, including preparing reports, briefings, procedures and guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team of people to provide consistent, responsive and high-quality policy advice and project support.
Highly Regarded:
- Experience in performance-based evaluation of management systems, including FRMS, SMS, or QMS
- Tertiary qualifications in Fatigue, Human Factors, Psychology, Safety, Public Policy, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
- Knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of Heavy Vehicle National Law.
- Experience developing educational and support material, preferably in a regulatory environment
