The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality, culturally appropriate legal services and representation to Aboriginal clients. You’ll contribute to strong practice standards, effective case management and a collaborative, community-focused legal service. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate criminal law advice, representation and court services to Aboriginal clients.
- Manage criminal matters from research and preparation through to court appearances, including Local, Children’s and District Courts.
- Maintain a busy caseload while preparing briefs, instructing counsel and delivering timely, professional legal services.
- Build trusted relationships with clients, colleagues and stakeholders, with respect for Aboriginal culture, community and individual circumstances.
- Maintain strong professional, ethical and legislative standards, including accurate file management, court scheduling and legal practice systems.
- Contribute to team development, law reform and continuous improvement, including mentoring junior solicitors and supporting effective workload management.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated Criminal Law Solicitor who understands and respects the cultural, social and historical context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You bring strong legal expertise, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to culturally appropriate service, justice and community. Key strengths include:
- Strong understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultural practices and the social and community needs of Aboriginal people.
- Demonstrated understanding of legal issues affecting socially and economically disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Relevant legal qualifications and current NSW Practising Certificate, or ability to obtain one immediately.
- Up-to-date knowledge of Criminal Law, including relevant legislation, practice and court procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, legal research, analytical, problem-solving and time-management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deadlines, and travel to ALS offices as required.
